It is drilled into us that if there is a traffic incident, that we are to stop and exchange insurance information. I never thought about how dangerous it might be to get out of the car in that type of situation.I have been bumped before at a stoplight and didn't get out to investigate mostly because it would have caused a major back up at the intersection, and I didn't believe there was any damage.
I'm not sure I would if I was alone in my car and if it was at night. Imight continue to drive to get somewhere with other people around before I looked at my car - especially if it was just a tap.
As a young woman alone, I would probably have tried to take information with the door locked and window just cracked. Or, I would have driven home and told my Dad the situation and he could contact our insurance. As a very senior citizen now, in a dark night, I would use my cell phone to call 911.
When I lived in Northern Virginia, there was a rash of assaults like this and law enforcement advised women to never stop on the road at night, even for them. We were to drive to a local police station or a busy place. I’ve never forgotten the advice.
