I enjoyed this book more than you did, but your review reminded me of the violence. I checked out the HBO series and I was struck by how bleak it looked. Based on some of the reviews, I don't think PBT'ers loved this book as much as some others did. I picked up book 2 after my book club meeting, but I'm not sure I'll get to it. There are so many other books and authors I want to try first.
I committed to reading the series this month for another challenge and in the midst of book 2. I'm enjoying the writing more but I still don't love the characters and their teenage angst. It will be interesting to see them a bit more grown. I'm not sure I could handle the story with a visual- so much abuse all around.
The tv-series is a masterpiece, I highly recommend it. But of course, I was also in the love camp regarding the book quartet.
I felt similar to you about this book, Jen, but plan to read the whole series. So far, I'm up to book 3. I keep wondering what I am missing since so many seem to love all these books.
I’m in much the same position as you, Jen - the book is beautifully written but it took me ages to read it because it never really pulled me in. So I’ve never wanted to go on and read any more. It’ll be interesting to see if the next one/s engage you any more
@Hilde, I will consider giving it a try with your recommendation. I'm almost done with book 2. It went slightly faster and the writing is growing on me but I still dislike pretty much every character and their mostly terrible and fully selfish choices. At least now I'm all in and wanting to know what happens next.

1950's Naples was gritty and harsh with poverty, chauvinism and violence. Family and reputation were everything. Sisters didn't go out without their brothers watching over them and threat to anyone who looked twice yet there was still abuse of the vulnerable. Life was harsh but the MC was so young, self absorbed and petty that it was quite hard to care for her or anyone really. The story is told from the POV of the MC looking back on her childhood which puts an extra distance between the reader and the young girls even as she judges herself and selfish behaviors. The cultural context is interesting. I'm not loving it but I will keep going based on others loving the series.
