What is it with the reference to 'creepy crawlies'?

I think the references to the bugs gives all adaptations an extra creepy feel. Some researchers believe insects are terrifying mainly because their physical forms are so unlike our own — skeletons outside their bodies, a skittery way of moving, too many legs and too many eyes. And this is basically what makes the Beldams original form so terrifying. Also, bugs are so scary because lots of them posses venom that can harm humans...sound familiar?

So I think the creepy crawlies add to the references Gaiman is making to the Other Mother being like a spider.
