Pedro Jorge (jamper) | 3 comments Partial translation with added essays is considered a new edition of the same book or a new book instead?

I am the editor of a Portuguese translation of the book "Green Market Revolution", which is a collection of essays by different authors. For my translation, I only included some of those essays, and then added other ones that were not included in the original English compilation. Is my book considered a new edition or a new book instead?

Thanks!

It would depend on the relative amounts of content. Roughly how many pages was the original, how much just the translated part, and how much the new part?

Thank you very much for the reply!
The original book has 18 chapters. I translated 11 of them. I would say I retained about 65% of the original book.
And then added new content: i) a new preface, ii) a new chapter written just for this book, iii) another chapter translated from other book, and iv) an appendix which consists of the translation of a lecture that has also been published elsewhere.

So in terms of the bulk of the book, it is pretty much the same of the original one, but my edition has lots of different contents from other sources. (this is non-fiction, in case that is not clear by now)

Also, I have rated the original book here on Goodreads, so I'm also a bit uncomfortable to appear as editor of a book I've rated. (but of course I could just delete my rating)

If the new one only has about 2/3 of the original, I would consider that enough to make them separate works.

Pedro Jorge (jamper) | 3 comments I agree that makes sense. Thank you!
