The Dark is Rising Sequence

First of all, let me just say that I LOVE these books so well that I started a fan group here on Goodreads. ;)

Absolutely excellent books for both genders, but more heavily male. The first book in the series, Over Sea, Under Stone has a Famous Five-esque vibe, and follows the three Drew children (a girl and two boys) on their adventures in Cornwall. Good, but CUTE.

The second (titular) book is The Dark is Rising. It is much darker and one I HIGHLY RECOMMEND for around the winter solstice and Christmastime for an 11 year old boy, since that's the age that Will Stanton's great battle against the Dark on behalf of the Light begins (also - a snowstorm).

The whole set, vintage or new, would make a great gift. But a circled-cross ornament or amulet would be a perfect accompaniment (see the group for links to products: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...).
