For those who have read Brubaker and want to read other Captain America that is worthwhile, I do recommend the Fallen Son collection. It's five issues long and each issue covers one of the stages of grief people go thru. This was written after the death of Captain America in Brubaker's run right after the Marvel Civil War event. It's written by Loeb, whose 17 year old son died a year or so before he wrote this. He captures the feeling of loss very well. These issues are not collected in the Brubaker omnibus volume. Marvel just did a new TPB printing of this story. There is an OHC and a standard size HC out there as well.

Looks like this could be updated with Captain America White, The second Lee volume, and probably the Vibranium edition. Maybe group the Brubaker stuff together.

Done. I have two OHCs in between the Brubaker stuff as that is where those stories fall chronologically. One dealing with the death of Cap right after Civil War and the other featuring Bucky as Cap.

Ah. I see what you did there. Makes sense now.
Did you ever read Truth? I wish I could easily read a copy of that.

I really want to check out the brubaker omnibuses as so many of them are in print. It'd be really cool to have all of them. I've always liked cap but never actually really checked him out. I think this is the way to do so. Any chance of reprints?

I'm purely guessing, but I think it might be awhile, especially for volumes 4 and 5 because they just came out in the last year or so. It's such a celebrated run that I'm sure it will be reprinted, but you are at least two years away from another Cap movie. You may want to go ahead and pick up the most recent ones that are still available.

I think the Trial of Captain America omnibus is really cheap right now as they are selling off stock and Marvel lowered their prices with retailers. I saw it for about $40 on Ebay for a sealed copy. The first two Brubaker omnibus volumes are OOP with the Death of Captain America being the more expensive volume. I think the most cost effective way to start would be to buy the Captain America Lives omnibus, followed by Trial, and then Return of the Winter Soldier. They have thick paperback collection the first and second omnibus to read the run while you are waiting for reprints.

I was thinking I'll get the trial of cap and the return of the winter soldier (they're in print) and then hide my time, hoping for reprints and keeping an eye on eBay.

Would it be more likely for the original cap omnibus by Stan lee to go out of print or the trial omnibus?

I was looking at Amazon here in the US. I forgot that the first Cap Omnibus by Lee has a new printing which was recent, so you may have a little more time on that one. The trial one has been out for at least a year. Tough call. Lots of people are interested in Cap now because of the movies.

If I could just get both...lol I'll go for trial less risky I think (hope) thanks for all the great advice btw. It's been really helpful!

One other thing about Cap: if you are interested in his first silver age appearance you need to read Avengers #4. That's in the Avengers omnibus V1 or the marvel masterworks avengers v1.

Hmm im not as concerned about when he first appeared or anything just want to follow his main story. Thanks tho

So.... I need the first 3 Brubaker Omnis and whenever I see a decent deal (around 90-100) for the Captain America Omni I almost pounce on it, but then I remember "Death of" and "Lives" go for like 200 each which I wouldn't pay for books that thin, meaning I'd be waiting for reprints... but if I'm waiting for reprints of those 2 I might as well wait for the Captain America Omnibus to be reprint also and get them all on IST for half price cover.

So I'm (a) venting and (b) curious for others thoughts...
Sincerely, Cap-less in Seattle

That's pretty much what I would do: wait for the reprints. I was lucky enough to find V1 cheap, but I don't have 2 or 3 either (or 4 or 5), although I have the singles of all of them so have already read it.
I think by waiting you are doing the right/rational thing. Paying 200 for these isn't worth it IMO.

Yeah, thanks! I will reread that post once a month and save some money thanks to you.
Yeah, thanks! I will reread that post once a month and save some money thanks to you.Now that Simonson's Thor and Ennis' Punisher are reprinted my whales are Brubaker Cap 1-3, along with X-Men 1&2, Inferno, and Hickman FF1.

Relstuart can correct me if I'm wrong, but it should be both before and after the Sentinel of Liberty OHC.
Waid's run had two parts: He wrote Cap for awhile, then stopped, and then came back again. Somewhere in there, he wrote a second Cap title, Sentinel of Liberty. That's about all I can remember. If I'm not mistaken, the Omnibus contains that second series as well.
I've only read a handful of issues but his run did receive some acclaim during that time. I do recall some people saying it was a little bit "preachy".

Blindzider is correct. :) Waid took over on Captain America after Mark Gruenwald's decade long run. Waid did a 20 issue run and then Liefeld took over for just over a year after Hero's Reborn when Marvel redid their universe. After Marvel course corrected and returned the more familiar heroes Waid returned to Captain America and did a 23 issue run, an annual and also the 12 issue Sentinel if Liberty and five issue Man Out of Time mini-series. The forthcoming omnibus contains all of Waid's Cap material except the Man Out of Time mini-series (probably because it is an original story and they aren't going with all of those details anymore?).

If you are planning on eventually getting all of Brubaker's Cap run the 4th or 5th omnibus is available at a very reasonable cost. I think Dheader on Ebay has copies less than $40 last I looked.

Yeah I picked up 4 and 5 on an auction together for 70 a while back, they are just sitting on myself, lonely but at least picked up at a good price!

I started with Brubaker's 4th and 5th Cap omnis due to the high prices of earlier volumes. They're easy to jump into without reading the previous volumes. Recently I picked up the first omni, so I'll be patiently awaiting a reprint of the 2nd and 3rd.

While some folks point out Brubaker loses a bit of steam towards the end of the Cap run, his Winter Solider issues were fantastic and well worth a read. Happily those are included in the last Captain America omnibus. :)
