I liked this. So much that when I woke too early, I got up and finished it.
For those who have read Abercrombie, this is not set in the First Law world. And it is very different. I wondered how he would handle a YA. I'm guessing that the difference is that he doesn't use "fuck" in every sentence and blood, guts and treachery are only every other page. Plus, DO NOT READ THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE READ EVERY SINGLE OTHER BOOK JOE ABERCROMBIE HAS WRITTEN!!!! (view spoiler) .
That being said, this is the story of a young man who would be king, oh no, he wouldn't be, yes he would, no he wouldn't, etc. (not nearly as annoying as my sentence sounds). There is the usual excellent world building, constantly battling kings, back-stabbing friends and helpful enemies, all set in a bleak place I wouldn't want to visit, much less live.
The boy who would be king, no he wouldn't etc. takes the place of the usual boy meets girl, they fall in love, no they don't, yes they do, they act stupid, part, fall in love, ad nauseum of many YA books. Because this IS Joe Abercrombie, and not a pretty vampire book, I'm thinking this is pretty adult stuff for teens looking for the usual.
Abercrombie writes dark fantasy, and even in YA, this holds true. In fact, if it weren't for the shortness of the book (compared to his others), the lack of obscenities, and the lesser amount of gore, you would never know this was YA.
And because the gods, Father Peace and Mother War (not the One God of the Evil Overlord King) smiled when I decided to read this, book 2 arrived last night in a fed ex box.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Ever the Same is a very sweet and touching story.
Dixon and Audie being together was so natural. They slowly progressed from friends to lovers, as their kids became friends and they saw each other more and more. Before they knew it, they became the most important thing in each other's lives, but it was kind of inevitable, since they were basically perfect for each other.
Their romance was easy. Outside of their family drama, they had a very open and loving relationship. They were honest and thoughtful, and didn't let anything get in the way of finding happiness with their new family they created. I liked that regardless of everything else going on, they relied on each other.
While I loved the couple, their dialogue really threw me off quite a few times. It was stiff and unnatural to me, especially the dirty talk. They said things like 'that's cool' and 'that rocks' a lot and, I don't know, it sounded weird to me. The conversations were a bit long winded and a little hard to follow sometimes.
The kids were cute! While I don't think they sounded kindergartners, they were still adorable. I especially loved Randi and how she worried about and helped her dad. She really stepped up and was such a sweet girl, she was never asked to help so much, it's just who she was and I loved it.
It was a nice story. I liked the characters, but the writing style lost me.

Review: I love books involving time travel, and this one was no exception. College student Joel finds himself catapulted back to 1941, where he at first struggles a bit, but then completely succeeds, in adjusting to a totally new lifestyle. Of course he meets many wonderful people, a new love, and his very own grandmother. The characters are what made this story come to life for me. It was a bit slow moving, but I thoroughly enjoyed becoming ensconced in these people's daily lives. The descriptions of the time period seemed to be spot on. The big question is whether Joel will stay, or go back to his own time. I must say that I did predict the ending, but enjoyed it just the same. Definitely a story worth reading!

Do you guys have your books picked out yet just in case? :)

I struggled to finish this book. The plot seems simple enough; a sorcerer awakes, discovers he's been dead for 2 years, now he's alive, inhabited by blue electric angels. He is hunting down those he thinks killed him.
Too much of the book rambles, the main character is sometimes we, sometimes me, and it's hard to follow. This book was very long but I finished it. Sadly, I already own the next 2 books. I hope they are much better.

There was the perfect mix of paranormal and teenage angst.
Regan and her family have just moved to a small town to take care of her aunt. She realizes that strange things happen in the thick fog and finds old diaries that back up what she's found and seeks help from a local guy, Nate. He tells her of the witches and their familiars and how both her and Nate are destined to protect people from them.
There's the story of Regan and Nate, and also the story of Lora and Rafe from 1645, during the witch hunts. I usually don't like books with two different story lines, because I find myself enjoying one more than the other, but I really was excited to read about both parts.
I'm hoping there's more to come, because it's all definitely open for a sequel.

Review: This was no sweet romanticized pirate novel. This was a gritty, gory, adventurous pirate story! Katherine is captured by pirates while traveling across the sea with her husband. Her life is forever changed as she transforms from a sweet, somewhat sheltered innocent; into a tough, hard as nails, survivor. We get to meet several of the pirate crew and learn a lot about their lives and backgrounds. This helped to make the story more "real" for me as I got to learn the "whys" and "hows" of what brought them to piracy. It was a bloody, murderous life, and this book brings out all the gory details. This book is definitely not for the faint of heart...I had to skim through some of the more grisly scenes. However, these scenes probably depicted a somewhat realistic view of the time period. I must say that this book does not have a clear-cut ending, which I am not too fond of. Being that it is the first in a series, it forces you to read the next to find out what happens.

Book - The Undead Pool by Kim Harrison
Rating - 5 Stars - I can't get enough of this series. It is full of action, adventure, great world building and characters that I want as my best friends. Rachel has gone through so much in the past 11 books I HOPE things are finally going to move in her favor. I don't want to say much about the book because I don't want to ruin anything for anyone but I will say I LOVED IT. I can't get enough of these characters that Kim pulls out of her head and I am going to be so disappointed when it is finally over that I won't know what to do with myself.

I'm not sure why, but I didn't like this as much as I have the past books. it seems like Jane is really whiny in this one. Plus her talents are getting out of hand in terms of all of her abilities - stopping time, the new bonding with Beast, etc.
We finally learn what it is that Leo was keeping in the basement. And it's not good. There is plenty of blood and gore in this one, starting from the first page. In the first battle, Jane actually gets severely injured and doesn't heal very fast, which was different.
Don't get me wrong I enjoyed this book, but not quite as much as the others which is why I gave it three and a half stars. I'll give it four on the regular Goodreads page.
