Review: Let me start by saying that this book was nothing like what I expected, yet I was pleasantly surprised. The hero Jesse is a sword-wielding "Champion" who fights demons to win back people's souls. But Jesse is not the typical "warrior" that we see over and over again in many urban fantasy novels, and I found it very refreshing. He is a happily married man to a wonderful wife, and a loving father to a young girl whom he adores. He works in between jobs at a hip clothing store at the local strip mall. He has season tickets to the local baseball stadium whose games he attends regularly. He has a killer sense of humor. Basically, he is just your average Joe, who happens to be a trained fighter with a strong sense of honor, wanting to do good and help others. I could have done with a little bit more action throughout the story (hey, it is a book about a "Champion"); but it was nice getting a glimpse into the normal parts of Jesse's everyday life as well. Because Jesse fights demons, the demons are an integral part of the story; and I enjoyed the authors take on them. We are introduced to a variety of demons and they are all different and unique (shape, size, personality, fighting skill level, etc.)...Keeps things interesting! The story wraps up nicely, but definitely has more to tell. I am interested in seeing what Jesse gets himself into next time.

Lisa P | 574 comments For the shelf Six-pack Attack I am going to read Untamed (MacKinnon's Rangers, #2) by Pamela Clare

I really loved the first book in this series and have been meaning to read the rest. I think the cover definitely qualifies for "abs of steel".

Week 7

Masked by Moonlight (Moonlight, #1) by Nancy Gideon

Book - Masked by Moonlight by Nancy Gideon

Rating - 3.75 Stars
This book has a good mix of paranormal, suspense, romance and even mobsters. It all blended well together and made for a great start to a new series that I will most likely be continuing. I loved the heroine in this book because even though it went against everything she believed Caissie wasn't as stubborn with her feelings as alot of characters in her place. The only reason it got 3.75 instead of 4 is because I like my heros with a little more independance I guess but that would have not really fit with the story I guess.

Review: I can't believe I waited so long to read this second book in the MacKinnon's Rangers series. This story focuses on the second brother Morgan MacKinnon, and what happens to him when he is captured and taken prisoner by the French. When it comes to hunky Scottish heroes, Pamela Clare just gets it. Morgan is smart, kind, honorable, loyal, generous, strong, brave, etc., etc...you get the picture. Everything a girl could possibly want in her guy...and did I mention easy on the eyes. It is the perfect combination of romance and adventure; and if you have a thing for Scottish highland warriors as I do, then this book might just be for you.

★★★☆☆

I'm giving the benefit of the doubt and assuming this is going to be a series, or there will be at least a sequel. Because, holy cliffhanger!

Labyrinth of Stone was fast paced, with lots of action and tons of smark.

Ten years ago, these people were mysteriously and randomly transported to a place they call the Labyrinth. They don't know where they are, or why or how they got there. Teller is part of the army that protects the Keep. Kearney and his ex, Colt, started this army to protect the Keep from the threats of the mysterious place they live in. The world they live in is brutal, and everyone is just trying to survive with what they have, which isn't much.

When the story starts, Colt has left. Kearney isn't quite sure how to deal with his lover up and leaving him. In his version of coping, he has sex with anyone who resembles his ex-lover. But he starts to notice that Teller is hot. He really starts to notice. Teller's not sure how to react to this.

I really liked Teller. He was snarky and fun. Even though he's straight, he didn't rule out being with Kearney, instead he kind of went for it.

I'm not sure how I feel about Kearney... he's not at all nice. He was rude, too possessive and not very likeable. He's totally messed up about his ex. He is obviously not over him, but is still way into Teller and not only in a one night stand kind of way.

They had some tension and, being both alpha males, there was fighting along the way. I don't know... I'm not too keen on MC's hitting each other. It really bothers me. I mean, they're on the same side, working together, right? Just because someone is bothering you doesn't mean you get to hit them, no matter who you are, male or female. It's something that I see in M/M romance that I just can't get behind.

Just like any start to a series, there's a lot of world building to muck through. I admit to being confused, but I also think there were quite a few holes. What was with the moss people? And the blood? The reach? I'm not entirely sure. It didn't help that I wasn't invested enough to go back and reread. I was at the point where I just wanted to finish and didn't want to put any more time into trying to figure it all out.

But, there's bound to be some fun love-triangle drama coming! If there's anything I'll read book 2 for, it's the return of Colt and how Teller is going to react. It should be great fun!

I think as the series continues (again, assuming this will be a series), and the world building becomes clearer, it will be an exciting ride.

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments Book: Burn for Me Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy, #1) by Ilona Andrews

Shelf: six pack attack
read : 4/6/15
rating: ****1/2

Forgive me errors, typing on my phone with a stylus.

I don't know why I ever put off reading books by Ilona Andrews, there is always lots of stuff that makes me laugh out loud. This book is no exception. It's set in a different magic world than the Kate books. And our heroine has a great relationship with her parents (father long deceased) siblings etc, not like Kate.

Don't have the book with me so I can't remember heroine's name. She is a PI with truthtelling as her magic. This is very rare; she has to keep it a secret. She is forced, under the threat of having her family (mother, grandmother, and numerous sibs) made homeless and losing everything, to do a job that will probably end up killing her.

One of the funny parts is her ridiculing bare-chested males (like the covers this book is being read for) - she gives the guy she is supposed to bring back alive a tee shirt and makes fun of him, to pique his interest.

She teams up with another similar guy, only this one she has the hots for, all the time hating herself for it.

Anti-hero guy was Curran like, but to the nth degree, macho macho macho.

Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of action, deaths, evildoing by heartless jerks, etc. It was very good as well as amusing. I went to see when the sequel comes out, and her blog was hysterical, since the publisher is insisting on a bare chest on the cover. Someone posted a copy of the cover with hero wearing a Hello Kitty tshirt, which is also very very funny.

Worth reading.

This one kind of snuck up on me.

At first, I thought all the happenings surrounding Nick were a bit far fetched. He's a freshman and went from being bullied and an outcast to one of the most popular guys in a matter of months. But then I thought of my freshman year in highschool and how much changes in just a short year... so yeah, maybe not so far fetched?

Through a string of coincidences and with the help of his new friends, he finds himself with a reputation of a 'bad boy' who kind of set his own rules. And this, really isn't farther from the truth for Nick. He's not really the person everyone thinks he is. He tries to keep up with the image and hides his true self, all while dealing with heartbreaking circumstances at home.

He does have one constant in his life, who does know the real him and still loves him for it, Bobby. Bobby is there for him like nobody else is and they grow to love each other. This is set in the early 70s, so they were confused about their feelings, but they did know that they had to keep it a secret.

I say it snuck up on me because in the beginning I was 'meh' about it and there were a couple things I found silly. But the further I read, the more I loved Nick and wished, right along with him, that he could be himself without the worry of the consequences. Despite a couple eye-rolling moments, it was very true to the pressure of high school, and needing to fit in and be accepted.

I do think I should warn you... there is no HEA. And not a sequel in sight.

I forgot how much I liked the books written before Mercy. This set of short stories reminds me. Gotta reread some books.

This set of short stories takes you way back to when some of the weres were born, back before dirt. Lots and lots of backstories on more than just weres, fae, etc.

This was excellent. I just wish I'd read some Mercy recently. You don't HAVE to have read any to read these, but I couldn't remember some of the players..

Time to dig box of Patricia Briggs out fot reading again!

Rating - 3 Stars Having not read the first book in this series I was surprised to be able to follow and enjoy this book. Even though the overall story arc started in the first book I was able to figure out what was going on and follow very easily. The story itself was pretty interesting and kept my interest till the very last page. The only reason I gave it a 3 star instead of 4 was because I don't really like the clueless, innocent, bookish type heroines. I like my heroines mouth and kick-ass but of course this just my preference.

Review: This is a series that has lots of potential. The main character, Cade, has been the President's vampire for 140 years...Secretly fighting the supernatural to keep America safe. This is not your typical vampire fare (Cade is most definitely not interested in romance). He is basically a powerful fighting machine out to fulfill an oath to a president(and enjoying it most of the time). The story begins with Zach and his first day on the job as the new human handler/presidential liaison for Cade. Zach's first day starts off with a bang as the action begins right away with their first assignment; and we learn more and more about Cade and his history, as the story unfolds through snippets of the top secret training manual that Zach reads for his new job. Zach is young but smart, and has a quick wit that had me chuckling out loud a few times. He has the perfect combination of fear and bravery to make his character believable. Cade was everything you would think a President's vampire would be; strong, powerful, smart, and extremely capable...a true warrior. Although, he keeps insisting that he is not human and is more of a monster himself, there was a glimmer here and there of human feeling that makes you care for him too. This book definitely has a horror element to it as well, which might make some a little squeamish. There were a few scenes that I found difficult to read. Overall, I loved the idea of the President's vampire though and can't wait to see what Cade and Zach get into next.

I was really disappointed with this book. Lots of creatures, sure, wizards, trolls, river goddess, witches, ghosts, etc.

I loved the first 4. This one, meh.

It wasn't as funny, it isn't stand alone, you better read the previous, and it just seemed less good. It dragged in parts, the ending was what? Not much.

And nothing to quote at all. Usually there are some lines that must be shared. Not in here, that I found.

Peter goes to the Countryside, should be the subtitle, gets mixed up in what? Not really clear why he has to go - supposedly because 2 kids disappeared, but lots of kids must disappear in the UK, and this is the first time anyone from Grant's outfit seemed to care.

The story mentions all the other missing kids that no one checked up on, so the main premise doesn't hold at all.

His paranormal catching devices didn't make any sense to me, at all. Once he said they didn't have GPS in the phones, but the entire warning system required that GPS.

And Leslie, what? Just throwing some stuff in so we don't forget her? I don't think we will, thanks anyway.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the next one is back. I usually find a bunch of very funny passages to share. Not this book.

Eeehhh... I probably should have read this right on the heels of book 3. I waited too long because it was hard for me to keep up with who's who and what's what. And I think my enjoyment suffered because of that.

I do still really like Mercy as a heroine and, of course, was so happy about Mercy & Adam.

If I decide to continue with the series, I think I'll reread first.

Review: The best part of this book was the relationship between the two brothers Cal and Niko. Without disclosing to much info, I will just say that the parents are not the cuddly, nurturing types; and the older brother Niko has been looking after and protecting Cal for his entire life. Also, something has been after Cal for years, and it has been Niko's job to keep him safe. Naturally, they have a close brotherly bond that nothing can come between. It also does not hurt the story any that Niko is a hunky hero and badass with a sword. Definitely lots of cringe-worthy fight scenes and lots of action. This book also introduced many paranormal creatures, some of which I had never heard of before, which made for an interesting, unusual tale. There were elves (not your cuddly cute ones), boggles, banshees, vampires, werewolves, and the mythological Pan (aka Robin). Robin was another one of my favorite characters, fighting side by side with Niko and Cal to save the day. Overall, an intriguing world ready for many more adventures.

So I'll read Black Magic Woman (Quincey Morris, #1) by Justin Gustainis , or A Madness of Angels (Matthew Swift, #1) by Kate Griffin or Desolate Angel by Chaz McGee or Crossed A Void City Novel by J.F. Lewis .

I would love to read Half a King (Shattered Sea, #1) by Joe Abercrombie but I need to save it for the next shelf, science fiction, since we'll need to win that!
