Simple question needs a profound answer

'm well into my adult years and I've long wanted to read for the joy of it. With credits between a masters and a doctorate, most if not all the reading I've done in my life has been out of necessity, not enjoyment. The challenge for me is that I'm VERY easily bored/turned off by reading. I desperately want to be drawn into the world of a book. I want to be drawn to it. I just don't know where to start and I'm fearful of another bad experience. I know myself well but despite that knowledge, I find myself ill equipt to find the right books for me, especially to start.

Any advice beyond the "ya just gotta get out there and experiment" responses I get from friends and family would be very much appreciated. Sounds silly but this means a lot to me.
Thanks in advance to any respondents.

A few book suggestions, if you haven't read them already, are:
The Harry Potter series
The Maze Runner Series
The Hunger Games Series
The Giver
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Ask friends and family for suggestions and make it a goal to finish that book.
