I just finished my re-read today. Really loved it.

WndyJW you make an important point. Zweig certainly had his visit to Russia in mind, when National Socialism took hold, didn't he? It's such a tragic, but a very beautiful read. Certainly one I will return to again, I know.

I feel like I've missed out by not getting along with this book - your enthusiasm is so infectious, Susan!

WndyJW I didn’t care for Beware of Pity and I’m only two chapters into this so I might flake out on it, it is almost 500 pages of smallish print, but so far I’m glad I was made aware of it.

If I didn’t know that Zweig was talking about WWII Europe I could think he was talking about the U.S. right now.

I’ll probably take a break from it to read Lolita, then go back to it.

I've decided not to reread this at the moment, due to time and numbers of other books clamouring to be read, but I do remember really liking it and its poignant picture of a vanished Europe, although I like his fiction even more.
