started this book today while i hd a sick day from work! loving the setting, there's just something about caves that give me the chills
Well, horror is different for each person... I'm only on chapter 2 but so far it's very interesting.
For me, it' not the horror that is missing. Some passages are really scary, the writer conveys and stretches at great lengths the obsession of being buried alive in the dark, suffocation and other fears like that. It's just the fact that it looks to me as if she gets carried away by it and the lack of a change of scenery make it really boring. Forthermore, like someone else said in here, it's too long, it could have been kept shorter. I will try to get to the end speedreading
I've been reading EARTHCORE (a looooong book but good ) and it's about caves and underground exploration too. Don't know how I managed to read two books like this at the same time.

Horror is different for everyone, as Kasia mentioned. What situation doesn't bother one, may be absolutely unbearable to another.

I'm really enjoying this one, onto chapter 5 :) Em reminds me of a character from Oblivion ( Tom Cruise movie).

I didn’t think about it like that. I didn’t mean to offend anyone. This is just different from what I usually read(gothic horror) and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I do like that I’m stumbling around this book not knowing what to expect because I feel like gyre is definitely unsure of what to expect at the end.

Everyone has different takes on even the most popular books. ALL opinions are valid! Personally, Gothic/Supernatural horror is my ultimate favorite. :)

I just checked my audible and I listened to this for 4 hrs 52 min yesterday lol... no wonder I felt extra tired today.

I'm on chapter 18 and I'm still really enjoying it. I like how the claustrophobia is still very much there but we we've moved into psychological horror territory. What's real? What's not?
I'm about the same place you are, Michelle. Just rounded Chapter 18. I do really like the claustrophobia sensation, and Gyre's constantly doubting her senses. However, the endless descriptions of the caves and climbing are starting to wear me down.
I still good with the descriptions, so far, but I can definitely see how they may become repetitive. hopefully it will change up a bit soon.
On Chapter 19 now, I think the repetitiveness is just trying to establish her situation, not sick of it yet haha.

Sometimes when I really get into the story I just carry my phone around with me and listen, also I never do the 1 speed, I usually do about 1.5-1.7 which isn't fast but I pref it a bit speedier usually.

Gyre being in a deep cave is enjoyable for her, but it's creeping me out. I like the story and find it hard to put down. I want to know what's going on.

I love how Gyre just called her lifesaving suit, a sarcophagus haha.

Oh shoot I just realized that Caitlin also wrote Yellow Jessamine, I got it a few weeks ago after hearing good things, really looking forward to it now.
Ok, gotta get back to this book today. I'm reading too many good books right now and sometimes get caught up in one of them and can't put it down.
Oh I enjoy when that happens Wendy, but I'm consciously trying not to read 10 books at the time. I get greedy.
I'm about half way through and I have a complaint. It may be minor but, for all that there are only two characters with anything to do or say, their names are mentioned about a bazillion times on every single page. I'm just about ready to look at the ending and throw this book in the trash.
I'm on chapter 33, nearly done. I'm still enjoying Gyre's hallucinations and psychological aspect of the story. The last few chapters got a little darker than I expected. I expect to finish tomorrow.
I've decided to throw in the towel and DNF. It was an amicable break up though... I was tired of the repetitive story of the book and the mention of the two characters names about 20 times on every single page and the book was tired of me grumbling about it.
So onward and upward. So many books to read. :)

Oh Wendy, I think I'd have a harder time reading this, so the audiobook helped me breeze through it, although I would just listen to it without headphones in the kitchen and had it on a faster speed and anytime my bf would walk into the room he'd say "oh geeez" cause Gyer was always whining about something lol.
So I got myself new airpods yesterday cause my phone doesn't have a headphone jack. Works great until I pick up Julian's Smurfs that he watches on my other phone lol.

I can't do audio books. Wish I could but... I can't just sit and listen to something, I'd have to be doing something else too. And then I'd stop paying attention to the audio book. I'm a mess. LOL
Anyway, it's always good to at least try something. I've been surprised by books, in both good and bad ways.

You know what's funny I tried reading and following with an audiobook at the same time, for funsies and I can't do it. They cancel each other rout and I get nothing. So weird.
It took me years to get into them so I understand 100%, they can be fun if you're playing Candy Crush on your phone or talking a walk, I've really been into folding laundry and audiobooks, because I suck at putting laundry away.

Audiobooks are how I survive boring tasks...like laundry.

I don't know if my body could survive that!

I'm only a couple of chapters in. I've been sidetracked with finishing one of King's books (The Institute). I finished it today so I should be able to focus on this one now :)
