I love a capella! These men are good.

My favourite a capella group is Canadian, and among other songs they did my favourite rendition of The Lion Sleeps Tonight bar none. All parts sung by men. This is the official video--it came out in the 1970s or 1980s. The original group was comprised of 4 out of work actors who first sang together just for fun. The Nylons were formed in Toronto in 1978 by actors Paul Cooper, Claude Morrison, Marc Connors, and Dennis Simpson.

They are all great, but I just love the bass voice a wee bit extra.

Karin Hi--I have a book reading game and don't do play lists. Could any of you post a song or music you love (new, so I can't cheat) so I can use it to link to a book I then read?

Please nothing with flashing lights or rapid picture changes--not all live music has that, but there are also records, etc.

Lela | 8 comments I'll just take the opportunity to share this incredible recording of my favorite piece of music here (Mahler 6, Bernstein, Vpo, 1988): https://youtu.be/giPhPdztm_Y - I can't even begin to describe the impact it had on me.

I played, literally, the first 8 chords, paused it and asked my son if he knew what it was, and he said,

"Yes, it's Mahler 6." He then proceeded to sing the very next part. I then asked him if I gave him more than he needed and it was also a yes, only half as much. But, obviously, he wouldn't get just any excerpt that quickly--that is a very distinct opening.

Not that he likes listening to Mahler or anything ;)

Mahler was to the orchestra what Chopin and Liszt were to the piano in many ways. His work is one of two main reasons orchestras are at a higher technical level today than they were 50 and 60 years ago. The other is blind auditions.

For some instruments, they require Mahler, because they know if the musician can play that well, they can play anything well. Also, blind auditions remove all unconscious bias (and I don't just mean white men were favoured, because there were physical builds they thought people had to have as well which were a myth, so it opened up (French) horn positions to small, slim men, but obviously women, minorities, et al are helped)

It always puts a smile on my face to find another Mahler fan - which happens every once in a while on the internet, luckily. Does he have any other favorite composers and/or pieces? My love is obviously Mahler, but I really enjoy Penderecki (especially the Requiem), Schoenberg (op. 11 and 15) and Shostakovich (Symphony no. 4) as well. It seems like your son really knows classical music well, so it would be great to discover something new! And I agree with your statement on the quality of orchestras. Even though, sadly, there still is a lot of prejudice in this field, blind auditions surely have helped immensely. And, playing Mahler is of course a challenge - one that would be my dream to take on at some point.

Sure, but I am in a rush.

But wait, there's more. We have an unbroken chain of Mahler fans starting with my late grandfather who was born during his lifetime. My grandfather, a musical snob, once told my dad that my dad couldn't possibly appreciate Mahler because he didn't know enough about music. As a youth I used to listen to my dad's Kindertotenlieder on a vinyl disk. However, unlike my grandfather and son, I can't just name his pieces like that!

Karin Synchrony by Jonathan Bailey Holland. He has been the Chair of Composition, Contemporary Music, and Core Studies where my son has been going to school (my son has played some of his stuff under Vimbaye Kaziboni) and is now going to be the Head of the music school at Carnegie Mellon University which is where my son is going to do his master's degree (thanks to a generous fellowship, etc)

Okay, it's composer Jonathan Bailey Howard. The specific one is Forged Sanctuaries Preview Video, but you can watch a performance of it by Curtis students (most selective and best music school in the US--better and harder to get into than Juilliard).

Karin Okay, this is the husband of a former colleague of mine I didn't know well. This is cool stuff, I think.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjFHR...

I contacted her in desperation trying to find leads on accordion teachers because the brother of 3 of my students wants to learn it! He as NEVER before wanted top lay an instrument and normally says he doesn't like music.

I didn't even know she was married, but she plays six kinds of accordion and helped premiere at least one work by an ex beau of mine, so found her contact info.

Cool, eh?

Karin I remember them! Neither of us thought of them--I forget the names of most of the groups and it started with a one hit wonders and bad songs type of thing.

Saturday Night! That's the one I always remember first by them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BKKa...

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments They were one of, if not the most popular band of the 70s but often neglected in retrospect despite the fact they were heralded as the most popular band since The Beatles. Those poor boys were so mistreated and it's heartbreaking that Les died without seeing a penny of the money that was rightfully his. Over the weekend Woody posted a picture he took where he wrote GIVE A LITTLE LOVE on the sand of the beach near his home.

Karin At 4 pm today EDT I'm going to be watching this--my son's first concert at Carnegie Mellon! It's going to be livestreamed, but should stay on Youtube after as well. If you're interested I can put the time the piece he is featured in starts. They rotate all of the instruments.

BUT if you watch it all there is a VERY talented harpist we met int he summer at a soiree he played in. This is unusual because it's a Wind Ensemble concert.

I hope you like it. My son's first piece starts at 1:05:00ish and he is the trumpeter with the beard and purple shirt and the trumpets, trombone and saxophones are seated in the front row. Plus there is a banjo (I love banjo) in it.

Karin This is my new voice teacher--I didn't listen to anything she sang until after the trial lesson so I would be able to sing in front of her. She has better videos, but I love this aria from La Traviata that she is singing in an immersive opera production. She isn't a world star, but is VERY good--good enough to be part of the Boston Lyric Opera company (the best one in the state.) I am sad to leave the one I've had but due to changes where I took and how far his home studio is, I went with someone he knows and trusts (he gave me her name plus another person.)

Okay, this is over 12 minutes, but you don't have to listen to it all. It's the last act.

The video quality is poor due to the lighting, but the sound isn't. FYI they speak some of the recitative stuff in English, but then sing the arias in Italian. (and it's a different opera company that my former teacher has also done roles with--they specialize in immersive opera.)
