Yes. My son is going to play a movement from a brass symphony my ex-beau wrote with some friends for his senior recital this spring, but it's only online in a symphonic arrangement he did for a friend. I'm still in occasional touch with that friend. (his favourite movement from it.)

Punsters will appreciate that my son requested his recital date to fit with his concert name (yes, he's a punster, too):

March 4th Let the Trumpet Sound

The flugelhorn, which is one of the auxiliary instruments trumpeters should know how to play.

message 187: by Karin (last edited Mar 10, 2022 09:03AM) (new)

Karin Here's some jazz flugelhorn played by Clark Terry, but it's also used in classical music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6a7Q...

but to get a really good idea of the sound in a contemporary recording, here is Alison Balsom, aka Lady Mendes, playing it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0VF6...

That's what happens when you have the mother of an aspiring trumpeter in the group :)

message 190: by Karin (last edited Mar 10, 2022 09:52AM) (new)

Karin 😊😊😊Yes, and most people who see that would think it was at trumpet because they have never heard of a flugelhorn! Your music link is a trumpet but in the photo you posted the dimensions are wrong for a trumpet :) If you look up there you can see the different dimensions. That is a valve flugelhorn. There are a few rotary trumpets that look a bit more like that, but never valve trumpets. Plus the size of the bell as compared to the man's face and the instrument in general.

Most people don't realize that or that trumpeters are the ones who play the flugelhorn and if they have enough training they play trumpet, flugelhorn, piccolo trumpet, cornet, etc.

Karin No, not at all Jazzy--I didn't think you were rude :)! I thought perhaps I was being too blunt.

Also, you might be able to transpose sea chanty for the flugelhorn, but I don't know enough about it. My son has played the school's flugelhorns at times (From the instrument library since students don't own all of the auxiliary instruments) as well as piccolo trumpet--he just owns his own mouthpieces and mutes if he needed them.

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 8 comments I'm a beginner trumpeter -- does the flugelhorn use the same fingerings? (I have heard of it.)

message 195: by Karin (last edited Mar 12, 2022 01:51PM) (new)

Karin Audrey wrote: "I'm a beginner trumpeter -- does the flugelhorn use the same fingerings? (I have heard of it.)"

Yes and no :). If you're just starting, you are most likely using a student B flat trumpet which means that the note you play as C is a concert B flat. I just asked my son, and he said the flugelhorn he played was also a B flat instrument, so the fingering is the same.

My son is busy but I think that what happens is that no matter what trumpet you use, you use the same fingering for the note you read as middle C even if it is a different concert pitch.

Confused? I'll explain :)

If you play an oboe or a regular flute, which are both C instruments, and you are playing in the key of B flat, every time you play a B flat, the trumpeters and clarinets are playing the same concert pitch but their score is written in the key of C.

There are other instruments that are different. This has a lot to do with the sizes of the instruments in question. An easier example is the recorder--all recorders are either C or F instruments, and it alternates. The soprano and tenor recorders are C, but the sopranino and alto are F.

Beginners always start with student B flat trumpets because they are easier to get a sound out of and to learn with. This also goes for instruments like the flute. It's much more difficult to get sound, especially a good sound, from professional ones.

Trumpets are not as simple. The C trumpet is best for playing in certain keys, and the same with a B flat. Someone who gets serious about trumpet usually ends up owning both, especially if they want to play classical music in an orchestra or ensemble.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments Sunday morning jazz

Ryo Fukui (福居良, Fukui Ryō), 1 June 1948–15 March 2016, aged 67
Ryo Fukui was a Japanese jazz pianist based in Sapporo. He played regularly at the "Slowboat" jazz club in Sapporo, which he and his wife Yasuko owned.Fukui began his life in music by learning accordion at age 18. At the age of 22 he began to teach himself piano and soon moved to Tokyo. Fukui met occasionally with saxophonist Hidehiko Matsumoto who offered valuable encouragement and guidance to the aspiring pianist. Nonetheless, Fukui was often disheartened, feeling as though he was not making significant improvement in his playing. Six years after moving to Tokyo, in 1976, Fukui released his first album, Scenery, and his second album, Mellow Dream, the year after. He continued improving his skills over the following years in live performance, often appearing in a trio including Satoshi Denpo, Yoshinori Fukui (Ryo's brother), and himself. The trio would often play at the Shinjuku Pit Inn, Kichijōji "Sometime" jazz club and the "Jazz Inn Lovely" in Nagoya. Fukui also began to perform overseas in France and America as well as beginning to teach jazz piano to students internationally.

Cool! Jazz is really popular in Japan, which is surprising since they are just beginning to slowly crawl out of extreme racism (as a country) now.
