Oh, that's not a regular guitar :) That's a dobro which I think is an American-invented instrument. There are a variety of models, but they all have the metal circle thing. I never saw any growing up. They can be "flat picked" or played the way guitars are.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments I know some people with Dobros (Don't you think they look like Totoro?) But they never played them like slide guitars.

As much as I say I don't like country music...did you know I'm in a Bluegrass band? ahaha

Here's a nice song.

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 8 comments The Piano Guys' Arrangement of O Come, O Come Emmanuel is so beautiful. I bought the sheet music so I can learn it on piano and violin. (I'll have to rewrite that part since the cello part goes through three clefs!)

Mostly I have been listening to random "ambient music" on YouTube that's nice for reading.

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 8 comments I don't like country, but I do like the challenge of fiddle music. Once I get better, I'll get some sheet music.

Dobros are picked but are most often played with a slide, usually a glass bar. That is the unique part of the sound, the slide.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dtPc...

There is another instrument called a true "American" invention, the mountain dulcimer. I actually own a mountain dulcimer. It also uses a slide called a "noter".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6OJ1...

Bing Futch is my favorite dulcimer player. He has a podcast Dulcimerica:

Here he is performing.

Very nice Jazzy. Are you in those clips?

message 58: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments Oooh I have a glass slide too! One of my friends said why did you buy that? Just use the top of a beer bottle!

Knowing a lot of people who play folk music, there are a few of my friends who have dulcimers too. I can't remember the name of the instrument at the moment but it is on a stand and you hit the strings with two beaters. One of my friends plays that. You might know what it is.

Wow look at that kid wailing away on that dulcimer!
You know I share all these with my mandolin teacher :) xx

The one on the stand is a hammered dulcimer. The strings are hit with little hammers to produce the sound. There are a dozen or so strings. These are usually handmade and are not standardized.

The mountain dulcimer usually has three/four strings. Being a traditional handmade instrument it can have variations. Bing plays a double dulcimer with electric pick up that he specially ordered.

My dulcimer is a Folkcraft built by J. S. Ash. It has four strings, but not really. I use DAD tuning. The upper D has two strings providing the drone sound. There are many styles of tuning. It is an instrument that must be "played by ear". I bought it just for fun and haven't touched it for a couple of years...you got me to pull it down and out of the case.

I play piano/organ for very formal services: weddings, funerals, Catholic masses. I have played in groups and also solo in large Nashville churches. I started playing services in 1985. People pay me to do this. The dulcimer was for fun. I had several pieces I could play that I had worked out, but at the moment I can't remember any of them!!

It took some searching to find but this is like my instrument.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments I'm so glad you got it out of the case again!! I like the F holes on it. They sell some like that with the folk instruments at JG Windows Music shop.
Well done Karin!! Glad to know there are other musicians on here, I'm in a band for fun and I can't say i'm really good, but they still pay us!
I was playing the toy piano today, it's one of my favourite instruments.

Yes, it looke like they have a slide in their left hand in that flat picking photo I found--it was just showing playing it flat rather than held like a regular guitar :)

It's one of the oldest surviving pieces of recorded music.

I just ordered a new violin bow, which I'm very excited about. I'm not advanced enough to do droning, but I've seen fiddle players use double stops AND a drone string at once, which I find insane.

message 69: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 1053 comments We do double stops on the mandolin. I suppose that would be like tremolo and a double stop at once??

Yes, it is! It's not for naught that it lives on, and it lends itself well to many different kinds of arrangements.

Karin Okay, so I am related to all Icelanders (this means nothing--all Icelanders who aren't immigrants are related, and I'm half Icleandic.)

My 7th cousin twice removed (I had a relative in Iceland look this up) who is in my general age range even though in the family tree she is the 7th cousin even though technically she is of one of my grandparents' generation (genealogy is so cool--she has some very long lived ancestors who had children late--but the generations line up differently over time!) helped to bring back traditional Icelandic music.

Unlike most of Europe, this island country kept much older harmonies popular until the 20th century. Often new words are put to traditional melodies (this is done all over the world of course.) Her husband plays guitar, lanspil, etc.

The langspil is in the zither family:

This one is with the langspir but the person who recorded it didn't have the best sound equipment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGXTi...

Chris is playing a guitar here and it's live. The lyrics are 17th century but the tune was already traditional. This is a prayer for clean air after a volcanic eruption had caused a lot of air pollution and problems in agriculture.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkqnf...

There are samples on their website as well https://www.funi-iceland.com/music

This is haunting but beautiful and from the other CD I have:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXhol...

FYI in Icelandic, Bára is pronounced a lot like bowra (as in take a bow, not a violin bow)

Karin Here are two of my first cousins--one is the vocalist and the other is that amazing lead guitarist. Originally there were three of them in the band, but one gave it up when he got married (very long story). Their other brother has an awesome voice but never in the band. Johannes is a full time musician, but the vocalist has day job. Just choose the kind of music you want.

Mostly in Vancouver, BC

Some kind of alternative or something band.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ7fD...

Just the lead guitarist with other musicians
BLUES with a great sax and a soloist by the Johannes on guitar. (said YO unnes, more or less--not German pronunciation--not sure which country, but he's half Greek with a shortened surname--shortened by his grandparents when they emigrated to the States, but he's been in Canada most of his life--probably anglicized!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmAui...

JAZZ with a talented vocalist but also actress KAREN HOLNESS who has gone on to big things (my cousins opted to not go that way) but a bit of the stuff with Johannes is on her Entertainment tonight profile

message 73: by Karin (new)

Karin Okay, on the other side, another cousin, but only listen if you like avante garde type electronic music (not most people's cup of tea). Do NOT feel that I am selling his CDs--I have one but never actually listen to it (did once) since it's not my cup of tea but it's how he's made a living.

Karin BUT not everyone in my family has musical talent! My dad can't sing--he was never good enough to join his dad's top choir at school. My sister and birth brother aren't musical, etc. It's just here and there. I am learning to sing but in no way am good like these others!

Irphen | 18 comments As I'm nearly always listening to music I listen to a lot of different things. Still I guess I listen the most to different kinds of metal/rock and folk music from all over the world. Lately I've had a little Tom Waits obsession espacially with the song "Jockey full of Bourbon" that I discovered thanks to the excellent movie "Down by Law' from Jim Jarmusch. Also I've a still ongoing obsession on viking music such as made by the band Wardruna. Got a bit soft on the metal level lately I guess but it is never far away and probably I will be headbanging my way before the end of the week on some Black Sabbath or Judas Priest! XD
