Top of the Pops (What music are you listening to?)

As much as I say I don't like country music...did you know I'm in a Bluegrass band? ahaha
Here's a nice song.

Mostly I have been listening to random "ambient music" on YouTube that's nice for reading.

Dobros are picked but are most often played with a slide, usually a glass bar. That is the unique part of the sound, the slide.

There is another instrument called a true "American" invention, the mountain dulcimer. I actually own a mountain dulcimer. It also uses a slide called a "noter".

Bing Futch is my favorite dulcimer player. He has a podcast Dulcimerica:
Here he is performing.

Very nice Jazzy. Are you in those clips?

Knowing a lot of people who play folk music, there are a few of my friends who have dulcimers too. I can't remember the name of the instrument at the moment but it is on a stand and you hit the strings with two beaters. One of my friends plays that. You might know what it is.
Wow look at that kid wailing away on that dulcimer!
You know I share all these with my mandolin teacher :) xx

The one on the stand is a hammered dulcimer. The strings are hit with little hammers to produce the sound. There are a dozen or so strings. These are usually handmade and are not standardized.
The mountain dulcimer usually has three/four strings. Being a traditional handmade instrument it can have variations. Bing plays a double dulcimer with electric pick up that he specially ordered.
My dulcimer is a Folkcraft built by J. S. Ash. It has four strings, but not really. I use DAD tuning. The upper D has two strings providing the drone sound. There are many styles of tuning. It is an instrument that must be "played by ear". I bought it just for fun and haven't touched it for a couple of years...you got me to pull it down and out of the case.
I play piano/organ for very formal services: weddings, funerals, Catholic masses. I have played in groups and also solo in large Nashville churches. I started playing services in 1985. People pay me to do this. The dulcimer was for fun. I had several pieces I could play that I had worked out, but at the moment I can't remember any of them!!
It took some searching to find but this is like my instrument.

Well done Karin!! Glad to know there are other musicians on here, I'm in a band for fun and I can't say i'm really good, but they still pay us!
I was playing the toy piano today, it's one of my favourite instruments.

I got an arrangement as well and also sang with a track on Youtube for my parents during 2020.

Yes, it looke like they have a slide in their left hand in that flat picking photo I found--it was just showing playing it flat rather than held like a regular guitar :)

It's one of the oldest surviving pieces of recorded music.
I just ordered a new violin bow, which I'm very excited about. I'm not advanced enough to do droning, but I've seen fiddle players use double stops AND a drone string at once, which I find insane.

Yes, it is! It's not for naught that it lives on, and it lends itself well to many different kinds of arrangements.

My 7th cousin twice removed (I had a relative in Iceland look this up) who is in my general age range even though in the family tree she is the 7th cousin even though technically she is of one of my grandparents' generation (genealogy is so cool--she has some very long lived ancestors who had children late--but the generations line up differently over time!) helped to bring back traditional Icelandic music.
Unlike most of Europe, this island country kept much older harmonies popular until the 20th century. Often new words are put to traditional melodies (this is done all over the world of course.) Her husband plays guitar, lanspil, etc.
The langspil is in the zither family:

This one is with the langspir but the person who recorded it didn't have the best sound equipment.

Chris is playing a guitar here and it's live. The lyrics are 17th century but the tune was already traditional. This is a prayer for clean air after a volcanic eruption had caused a lot of air pollution and problems in agriculture.

There are samples on their website as well https://www.funi-iceland.com/music
This is haunting but beautiful and from the other CD I have:

FYI in Icelandic, Bára is pronounced a lot like bowra (as in take a bow, not a violin bow)

Mostly in Vancouver, BC
Some kind of alternative or something band.

Just the lead guitarist with other musicians
BLUES with a great sax and a soloist by the Johannes on guitar. (said YO unnes, more or less--not German pronunciation--not sure which country, but he's half Greek with a shortened surname--shortened by his grandparents when they emigrated to the States, but he's been in Canada most of his life--probably anglicized!)

JAZZ with a talented vocalist but also actress KAREN HOLNESS who has gone on to big things (my cousins opted to not go that way) but a bit of the stuff with Johannes is on her Entertainment tonight profile

I love the langspir. The simple haunting melody and the cool instrument were really nice.

Cool! The Carter Family were/are really something!!!!!

But I am more closely related (5th cousin) to this world class concert pianist Víkingur Ólafsson. Sure, this is a long shot
Here is his playing Grieg with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Hbi1...
Mozart at the BBC Proms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=790bY...
Debussy on Deutsche Grammaphon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KzML...
Plus there are many other things, including Bach, that he has preformed that are on Youtube

Haha, some good old heavy metal never gets out of date! ;-)

This is very good!

I absolutely love the Head Hunters album. In HS my friends and I used to play Chameleon until our fingers bled.

They sing one of my all time favourite versions of Scarborough Fair. Here's the remastered original recording by them:

I listened to some of this. Vikingur Olaffson is very talented. Also, I really enjoy Grieg's music.
Oh, that's not a regular guitar :) That's a dobro which I think is an American-invented instrument. There are a variety of models, but they all have the metal circle thing. I never saw any growing up. They can be "flat picked" or played the way guitars are.
