Marcia 30 years ago, I read a very chilling book in high school and have no idea what it looked like, author, name etc. Here's what I do remember...

There's a man whose car stops, breaks down, magically quits working in front of a creepy house. Of course it was dark and the weather was awful. The house was called the Cranston Collier house. That part I'm pretty sure about. It was a really weird place and I remember it was confusingly built. I think the builder was described as having gone crazy in the process of building it. One area, hallway maybe, went nowhere and led to nothing. I think it got smaller. The house may have been vacant, but I vaguely remember a pretty heated, in the opinion of a 15ish year old overly sheltered virgin, sexual encounter. I think the house was a place he was supposed to be, and as the book continues, scary things keep happening. The only one I remember is psycho monkeys. I think they are the reason he dies, like they eat him or something. Basically the house made him go crazy and then killed him, or ate him.

As an adult, it reminds me of something I'd expect from Stephen King, I've never read anything by him so IDK, but I really want to read it again. I have searched as much as I can, but so far no luck. I only read it then because I was stuck in a religious school and we had to write a poem on a book. This one was guaranteed to scare the hell out of everyone and that was a fun idea. My mother threw the assignment, and the book I borrowed, away. There were also meetings - it was hilarious! Still is. LOL

Denis DeLong | 211 comments I keep searching, because I really want you to find this book -- sounds like something I'd really like to read myself. So this would have been published around early 1990's? Can you remember anything else at all? Cover art, anything at all? Even if it's incorrect, it can still provide a lead (did once for me).

Yes, it was around '94, '95 so maybe published early '90's? Could have even been late '80's. IDK

It may have had a house on the cover, but that might be common sense talking. I wish I could remember more.
