The book opens with the son of the heroine tricking her into bringing soup to a man, because the son wants a father. The son is the illegitimate offspring of a lord, but the heroine has refused to tell him much about his father. One day the son (or maybe son and the heroine) finds a man passed out/beaten up/robbed. The heroine and her son help the man and then when he wakes, he sends a letter to his older brother.
The older brother is the Hero of the story and when he shows up, he seems to be odd to the heroine. It turns out that the hero was born with hia umbilical cord around his neck (or something similar) and this caused a delay in his speech/learning. He doesn't always pick up on things quickly but he is gentle and kind (while also being leery of certain people, namely his mother). Ultimately the hero rescues the heroine and she goes to live above (?) a library where the hero's mother volunteers. This gives the heroine a place to work and she and her son have a place to live. The hero is also an artist and he and the heroine's son begin to bond over painting. At first the son is trying to set his mom up with the brother but eventually the heroine and hero connect.
It is revealed in a scene where the heroine, her son, and the hero go on a walk (or meet while walking?) That the hero was sent away from home when he was a child. He was sent to live in a place run by nuns and they forced him to take ice baths. He is reluctant to try the lemon ice that the heroine, but enjoys it once he tries it.
The story also revolves around the family of the hero reconnecting and old family wounds being healed. The mother and her new husband must finally reveal in the end that the new husband is actually the father of the hero(amd maybe the father od the hero's brother?), but the hero's official father never knew his sons were not his biological children. The man the hero called father in his youth was lord and was an abusive mean man. He hated the idea of his son being imperfect. The mother sent the hero away to keep him safe (not knowing what would become of him) but the hero just thinks she abandoned him and pushed him away. They reconnect by the end of the story.
