Recommandations for an authentic American crime story

I am looking for good American crime novel which describes the daily job of an American cop (American police work) authentically with authentic characters which give an insight into the local culture.

This is going back a few years, but the Lou Boldt series by Ridley Pearson is a favorite of mine.
