I don't have a review for it yet, but here's where it'll be when I do get one...

Gracie | 315 comments The Hobbit The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was surprisingly a hard read, but nonetheless, I enjoyed it! All of the adventures, creatures, and events were really interesting to read about. There were a couple instances where I felt like the scene happening could have had more time spent on it, but overall I understood what was happening. I will say, most of the chapters are ridiculously long. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I have always loved those short chapters. XD
I would also like to add that all of the songs and riddles were really well thought out. They made the story more interesting and caused you to think a little bit.
Anyway, I believe that this book is an essential read. It was super fun joining in on the adventure with Bilbo and the dwarves and seeing all the dangers they faced.

Great review, Gracie! Will you be reading LotR sometime in the future?

Gracie | 315 comments I think I will :) I have a long line of books to read, but I will definitely read them one of these days 😂

Ella あいみ M. (further_up_and_further_in) It's not my best work or anything, and I wrote it in a hurry, but here it is. 😊

Great review! I like how you summarized things into a short, cohesive review! Every time I try to write, it gets so long because I don't know how to do "short but to the point." 😄

Gracie | 315 comments Haha thank you guys!
And I totally get you 😂
Also, I loved how you described Bilbo’s character. All of it is so true!

Ella あいみ M. (further_up_and_further_in) Aw, thanks!
Is The Hobbit the only book by Tolkien that you've read?

Gracie | 315 comments …yes
I know, it’s sad. But I do want to check out some more of his books in the near future!

You should! You should!
(I second Lily XD)

It's totally fine if you haven't yet! They're great! Just, his other books are a little harder (and longer!) to read. I had a hard time the first time I read it, too. But if you want a short read, his short story Farmer Giles of Ham is fun!

Gracie | 315 comments Ooo cool! I’ll definitely check it out! :)

Awww, LotR isn't too hard! It's just long lol. But I think if you think of it as three separate books, it's much more manageable. And I think people who've read The Hobbit and LotR usually like the second better!

Ella あいみ M. (further_up_and_further_in) Oh, no. LotR isn't that bad. Sorry I was talking about his other books being harder. But it sure is a lot longer!

But you're right, if you think about it as three separate books, it'll be easier. I tackled all at once (I have the 3 in 1 edition) so it felt so longgggg!

Ella あいみ M. (further_up_and_further_in) How long did it take you to read all 3 books when you first read it?

Um... I don't remember XD

Less than a year. I remember I read The Hobbit + LotR in 7th grade and then The Silmarillion the summer after, so I was def done with LotR by the time summer rolled around then.

I didn't have much to do that year, though.

Ella あいみ M. (further_up_and_further_in) Wow, you read The Silmarillion in 8th grade? Puts me to shame... XD

Ella あいみ M. (further_up_and_further_in) I beat you in LotR, tho. The first time I read it, I finished the 3 books in 10 days. Hehehe. XD

WOW. How?!?! Just how?! I don't think I've ever read a Tolkien book in less than a week let alone three in that amount of time!

Yeah XD Plus I remember lots of confusion over Fingon vs. Fingolfin before I finally figured out their differences (and that I liked Fingon better) LOL

Ella あいみ M. (further_up_and_further_in) Yes! Exactly! When the names are similar, it just makes things so much harder! I had to take detailed notes to keep track of everything. XD

Yeah! I've read it multiple times. I don't remember exactly how many times, though. It's just one of those books that never gets old. ☺️

Ooh, you should do a reread someday! Just takes a lot of time, ik.

Same, tho. It's actually been over a year I think since I last read it, too, so I don't remember all the little details.

Yep! I realized from last year that I read 100+ books and barely anything by Tolkien! So that didn't feel good lol

Ella あいみ M. (further_up_and_further_in) Hahaha. Yeah, I just realized I read 200+ books and didn't read much C.S. Lewis. And he's one of my favorite authors! 😄

I'm not sure. I want to read a lot, but I want to make sure I don't go overboard with it. I want to spend more time with God this year, but yeah, I might get into more nonfiction. There are a lot of good nonfiction books out there!

We have Mere Christianity and some of Lewis's other books at work, so I might try to find an excuse to read it for work. XD

That's true!! I want to do more audiobooks, too, so there's less of a strain on my eyes. If you've got some theological books or Christian nonfiction at least, those could be really good! That's what I'm going for :)

I still can't believe you just get to read for work!! That's like the best job ever!

Ella あいみ M. (further_up_and_further_in) Yh, I totally agree. I seriously discovered the convenience and awesomeness of audiobooks last year.

Ooh, The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence was really good! I know I've read others, too, but I can't think of any rn.

Ikr! It's fun! But since I'm teaching kids, I end up reading Thomas picture books and stuff a lot! But I sometimes make excuses to "review" the other books for the older kids. XD

I just found out nearly all of Agatha Christie's audiobooks are on YouTube, so I'm really happy about that!!

I've got some books on End Times by David Jeremiah that I really want to read and then I want to get back into doing devotionals, too! (I made the mistake of doing like three at a time and that didn't last long...)

Haha I like that! Maybe someday I'll get to work at Barnes and Noble or something? *gets dreamy eyes*

Ella あいみ M. (further_up_and_further_in) Wow, really?! I'll check those out!

Ooh, we have a lot of end times books at our house, too. Well, my dad has a lot in his office. I just never really read them because he always gives me a play-by-play when he finishes, so I know everything it talks about.
Ah yes. I've done the same thing. It does get hard keeping up with so many devotionals.

Yes! Go follow that dreammmm! You can do it! Maybe you can even get a cardboard cutout of you and prop it up somewhere, and just read all day. 😏
