Finger Hut Thimble Museum
Creglingen, Germany
Located on a popular tourist route called The German Romantic Road, our treasure hunt takes us to a small museum in Creglingen Germany which spotlights a humble sewing tool. This is fitting since for many years, Germany was the center of production of the thimble. This important tool has a long history, dating as far back as Ancient Rome. And besides helping women with their sewing, thimbles were known to hold a symbolic meaning, given to women since the 1600's during courtship as tokens of love. One is even mentioned in the story of Peter Pan, when Wendy places a thimble in Peter’s hand in place of a kiss.
The Finger Hut Museum houses a unique collection of over 4,000 thimbles representing every style, type and make from all over the world. There are thimbles made from almost any material you could imagine: leather, gold, embroidered silk, animal bone, glass, ceramic, ivory, stone, and more. They span a bewildering array of styles, from jewel-encrusted thimbles adorned with intricate miniature sculptures to strictly utilitarian tools.
Owners, Thorvald and Brigitte Greif, originally opened the museum in 1982 to pay tribute to the history of German thimble manufacturers and production, specifically that of the Gabler Company. But their incredible collection has grown and become world renown. Today, the Greifs continue thimble manufacturing in their goldsmith shop, where they produce a small range of specially designed collectors thimbles, including a set based on the life of Martin Luther and another on the voyage of the Titanic.
