Treasure #21
Latitude: 6.445334203448
Longitude: 3.403439623291

Benin Bronzes
Nigerian National Museum, Lagos, Nigeria
The Brenin Bronzes have been in the news quite a bit the last year or two. This large treasure is a group of several thousand metal plaques and sculptures that once decorated the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin, in what is now Edo State, Nigeria. Collectively, the objects are an incredible example of Benin art and metal workmanship from the 13th - 16th centuries, made by artists of the Edo people. Apart from the plaques, other sculptures include portrait heads, small statues and jewelry. Although the works generally are called "bronzes", they are made of several different materials, including bronze, brass, zinc and lead. They were made using lost-wax casting and are considered among the best examples of this technique.
But what makes this treasure newsworthy and even controversial, is that the entire collection of bronzes were taken by British forces during the Benin Expedition of 1897 as imperial, control was being consolidated in Southern Nigeria. Two hundred pieces were immediately given to the British Museum in London, while the rest of the plunder found its way to other museums. All told, there are 160 institutions across the world holding some of these culturally important art pieces from Africa. The 2nd largest collection being found at the Ethnological Museum of Berlin.
Nigeria has been actively pursuing the return of their bronzes and in 2020, Germany announced their plans to repatriate all of its Benin Bronzes. Their decision triggered many other museums working toward the same goal, and within the next two years, many (but certainly not all) of the pieces have been returned to Nigeria. You can see the returned bronzes at the Nigerian National Museum in Lagos, which is where our coordinates take us. But this will not be their final home. Nigeria is in the process of building a museum to showcase this cultural treasure in Benin City. The Edo Museum of West African Art is set to open in 2025, with the hope that more Benin Bronzes will find their way back to their original home.
If you can't make it Africa, or one of the other locations of the Brenin Bronzes, you can now access a database of all the pieces through the online platform Digital Benin. It lists institutions from 20 countries that include Benin cultural heritage in their collections. This new platform allows visitors to learn about the specifications, location and provenance of more than 5,000 African artifacts, including maps, high-resolution images, and the title of the works in English and Edo languages. This impressive website can be found at: digitalbenin.org.

Didn't we have Latitude before Longitude on all the other hunts?
