Jan | 20828 comments Treasure #12
Oldest Recipe Book: Cuneiform Cuisine
Discovered in Ancient Ruins of Babylon, Iraq
Latitude: 32.542988
Longitude: 44.421190

How many of you love cookbooks? I have a whole bookcase full of them so I was intrigued when I ran across this Babylonian tablet that is said to be the oldest cookbook in the world. What a treasure that is! Discovered where the ancient ruins of Babylon are located in Iraq (which is where our coordinates take us), this table is one of three that are part of the Yale University Babylonian Collection.

When we think of ancient clay tables with strange writings on them, cooking recipes are hardly the first thing that come to mind. But this tablet, that was inscribed in Akkadian (one of the most complex forms of scribes), documents several exquisite dishes, some using rare and unknown ingredients. Though the recipes list the order in which each ingredient should be added, it doesn’t mention the amounts used, implying that the tablet was a guide for experiences chefs. All of the recipes have one thing in common: each of the finished dishes relies on combinations of meat, fowl, vegetables, or grain cooked in water. Cooking in liquid represented a giant step forward in terms of taste and sophistication. It created a richness and diversity of flavor that could not be achieved in the more ancient roasted, grilled, and broiled food.

Several different international teams versed in culinary history, food chemistry and cuneiform studies have tried to recreate these recipes with interesting and varied results. I have a few treasures from my mother’s recipe box that I have tried to decipher and recreate, so I can only imagine how difficult this task would have been. You can visit this website to learn about this experiment: https://news.yale.edu/2018/06/14/what...

I included the second picture so you would have an idea of the size of the tablet. Did they have reading glasses in Ancient Babylon?

I'll get you down for your number Barb!

I have way too many cookbooks too! Have you ever heard of Eat Your Books. It's a website that indexes cookbooks. You load all your cookbooks into it and then it will search all your cookbooks AND cooking magazines for a particular recipe, telling you which of your books have it. It works for ingredients too. It's a great tool. There is an annual fee that is about $35 dollars to use it.

I have heard of it, but haven't quite justified paying an annual fee, especially now that Hubby's retired and here all the time. He's a very picky eater and hates to try anything new :(

message 650: by Jan, Moderator (new)

Jan | 20828 comments I get it! Barb! I struggle paying it too but I justify it by the fact that I use my cookbooks more when I use the site.
