Treasure #9
Qasr al-Farid, or “The Lonely Castle,
Located at the archaeological site of Mada'in Salih in Saudi Arabia
Latitude 26.77415
Longitude: 37.96111

Our next treasure is a remarkable remote tomb known as Qasr al-Farid or The Lonely Castle. It is part of a larger pre-Islamic archaeological site called Mada’in Saleh, located in Saudi Arabia. The main site are the ruins of Hegra, a settlement of the Nabateans, a first century nomadic people whose capital was the famous archaeological site of Petra in Jordon.
Qasr al-Farid stands by itself about 3 miles from the settlement ruins. It is the most photographed structure and has become an iconic symbol for the rest of the area. Even though it is unfinished, it is still a stunning example of Nabatean carved architecture, displaying their expertise and construction technique of chiseling their tombs right out of the rock from the top to bottom. The façades are finely carved and fairly uniform in style. A portal in the center of the façade provides the entrance to the tomb where the deceased are placed in recesses carved into the walls.
Carved architecture like this tomb literally boggles my mind. It’s unfathomable to me how it is accomplished and certainly qualifies as a treasure. In 2008 UNESCO proclaimed Mada’in Saleh as a site of patrimony, becoming Saudi Arabia’s first World Heritage Site. If you would like to learn more about the site visit: saudi-archaeology dot com and find Mada’in Saleh under "sites".

I can take a longitude 5 For Whom the Bell Tollsby Ernest Hemingway 544 pages

I’ll take Latitude #3 with Murder on the Ballarat Train by Kerry Greenwood, book 3 in the Phryne Fisher series.
