And keep in mind that a lot of the POC thing has to do with the time period. Especially with the going-ons about the Japanese and stuff.

Oh yeah, I know that~ But if ABC found a way to incorporate a lot of strong and well written female characters in this sexist era, then they can find a way to write in characters that aren't just white people ^^

(view spoiler)

message 182: by corina (new)

corina (molteneyes) Yeah, part of the POC problem is the time period, but also it's not like there weren't any African-Americans in goddamn America so.

I realize that. And it's not like black people are th only POC >.>
What I am saying is that in the '40s, there was a lot more open racism, especially toward Asians, particularly Japanese. So I highly doubt there would be an Asian agent. And again, the SSR hardly used Peggy as an agent, and she had already obviously proved herself; so why would it be any different for a POC? That would also draw attention away from Peggy... who the show is named after.

message 185: by corina (new)

corina (molteneyes) I just used African-Americans as an example since so much of American history was made and built up by them. I mean, we have black history month, but I think I've seen one African-American with a speaking role so far. And all other POC are under-represented as well, so I'm not saying that they aren't.

message 186: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh yeah, of course Black people are not the only POC and neither are asians. No one said anything about an asian agent, but instead I just wanted to see more (generally speaking) POC throughout the whole show (agent or not, they could write in the struggles of the minorities into the plot line ^^).

But I'm not sure it would draw attention away from her, necessarily... If they took the time to write other strong female leads that don't distract from Peggy's character, they should also have the time to input a minority and address the fact that the 40s was not only sexist (As they did with Peggy herself), but racist as well~

message 187: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 17, 2015 01:59PM) (new)

A lot of people treat it like it's only black people who need representation.
I want to punch those people in the face (◡‿◡✿)

And American history has been built up by every person who has lived in it. Blacks, Asians, Latinos, every type of gender and sex and sexual orientation — they've all contributed. It's not really fair to say one more than the other just because of slavery. What about the Chinese working on the railroad? The Irish potato famine? The Japanese internment camps?

And anyway, in the 1940s I dare say that the Japanese faced the most oppression, at least from the government.

message 188: by [deleted user] (new)

And I never said that it had to be an Asian. I was using an example, based on racism in the historical context of the 1940s.

I do think that if they took as much time as they did with Peggy, then yes, it could take away from her plot. Like. I'm not saying that it shouldn't be there. But I'm saying that sometimes the focus that they want to put on it they can't because the main plotline is, well, the main plotline. I would like to see representation as much as everyone else. But I als think it's important or stay true to the plot and they should do what they need to. It's already a wonderfully progressive show :)

Yeah I want to punch those people in the face as well bc it gets damn annoying but I never specified any race until asians were mentioned (and then later what Rina said ^^)~

I'm aware that different people have faced oppression in America throughout the years, but like I said I only ever specified the types of POC after you specified Asians. The Japanese really did face a lot of oppression though throughout this time, so I get it~

But what I was trying to say is that it doesn't matter what POC the writers put in there. Black, Asian, Hispanic, all of the above. What matters in the show is that there is an extreme lack of diversity among the cast. If ABC can write [white] women into their plot line that is set in the 1940s, then they can certainly write well rounded minority characters in the same time period.

message 190: by corina (new)

corina (molteneyes) I'm not saying blacks are the only POC. I'm not saying anyone is in more need of representation than any other group. But if you picked ten people out of the crowd at random in NYC in the 1940's, chances are you'd probably get 6 Caucasians, 2 African-Americans, and 2 of some other race. I'm just saying that the probability in terms of who you would see would lean towards African-Americans rather than, I don't know, someone from Bangladesh, even though they should be represented too. That's all I was trying to say. And if I'm wrong, please, tell me.

And I agree with Willow, it doesn't necessarily have to be an agent. Just something there, showing that it wasn't just women being suppressed.

Also it'd hard to take the focus away from someone like Hayley Atwell so.

It is a really progressive show ^^ but that still doesn't excuse the fact that the cast is all white, practically. It doesn't even have to be a major role, but there should still be a cast that isn't so blatantly white :)

message 194: by [deleted user] (new)

Anyway, I'm just going to take what I can get. I'd rather have almost no POC than awful racial stereotypes like on Glee. I love what they're doing with their female characters, and I'm content with that.

I understand ^^ I wouldn't want stereotypes either,glee was a fail smh but I'd still like a diverse cast.

message 196: by [deleted user] (new)

If they gave me a great diverse cast, I'd be thrilled.
Buuuuuut I think little, but good, representation is better than reinforcing bad stereotypes. Glee is such a problematic show >.> but I do love Darren Criss and Grant Gustin.

corina (molteneyes) I'll definitely take less representation over stereotypes.
Stereotypes piss me off.

I'm completely on board with that, and it was what I was saying ^^ I'd rather have minorities in small roles, no stereotypes, and a more diverse "cast" or whatever rather than minorities having a large role just to fulfill a white need to see something "exotic and colorful"~

Dude yes glee really is problematic and toxic gah. But Darren Criss yum

Mmmhmm. And I think that they have diverse characters as far as their characterization and personalities (not based on ethnicity/gender), and that makes me very happy. Because they're less archetypical and more individual.

I had a Glee phase. *shudders* But I do still like the music, ngl.

message 200: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh gosh don't remind me about my Glee phase. It's embarrassing... I was a very problematic child
