The novel starts with a high-stakes poker game in an airplane where the producer wins the rights to a movie script which I believe was called "King of the boat people" or similar. Found the novel as a paperback in the late 80s, the subject and style suggest authors such as Harold Robbins, Jackie Collins or Herbert Kastle but no luck identifying it so far.
