Harold Citron | 10 comments So, the reason I joined is I am trying to find an old Sci Fi book I had read as a child in the 1970's. The book was given to me by an older aunt, now long gone and was likely published sometime in the 1950's through 1960's.

I remember little about the book, but three things stand out. The first is it takes place in space on a space station. The human hero has an uncanny ability to guess which floor of the station he is on through the various levels of gravity / pressure on the floor (this was part of an introduction test. The third was dealing with an alien spaceship of unknown origin.

I know its a very thin premise to go on, but I would be thrilled with any help in discovering this old book.

Thanks,

Harold

That does ring a bell with me, but it's not bringing anything to mind. I'll let the thought ferment and come back to you if anything germinates. Yes, I know that's a mixed metaphor.

Thanks for the heads up, Paul. I appreciate it. Here's to hoping.

Stephen Burridge | 507 comments That sounds a bit like Heinlein’s Space Cadet. The Academy the protagonist attends is an orbital station. He doesn’t have an “uncanny” ability to tell what level he’s on, but I believe there is some discussion of the issue. And there is a mysterious old spaceship encountered late in the story on Venus.

Pretty good book imo, like most of the Heinlein “juveniles”.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the heads up. After looking at the various editions, it could be. The old spaceship from Venus also rings a bell.

grabbed a copy from eBay and will see.

Stephen Burridge | 507 comments I hope I didn’t mislead you. I’m not sure about the different levels of gravity.

Hi Stephen.

I just finished Space Cadet. Unfortunately, it was not the book I have been searching for, so back to square one in my quest.

On the positive side, it was a good read, so overall a plus and good addition to my collection. I appreciate the attempt.

Hi Paul. Just wondering if you had any success with the book fermentation?

Kind regards,

Harold
