5 stars
A fascinating collection of short stories from the nurses that have just about seen and heard it all. Some are heartwrenching, many are graphic, others touching, and a couple funny but all show the reality of working in the ER where you must be ready for anything. I have one complaint, I would have liked to see the picture of the person put with the story instead of at the back of the book.
I am in ah of anyone who makes this career. I highly recommend this book.

Charlie Ravioli (charlie_ravioli) | 611 comments Thanks for your review. I had never heard of this book and it's not generally something I would pick up but your review triggers me to want to. Nurses (E.R. or otherwise) are just amazing people and I am always blown away at how they do what they do, especially these days. Year before last I visited my Aunt who had suffered a stroke and was in intensive care for a month much of it on a ventilator. She had something like 10 different nurses and I swear they were all Irish and named Maureen (at least that's what it seemed like to me). Anyway, I was just blown away at how much they cared for her and the way they talked to her and they knew nothing about her. I am convinced that without each of them helping her, talking to her, caring for here, my aunt wouldn't have made it thru and recovered.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11062 comments I'd like to read something about nurses too. I saw this book, and one called The Nightshift Before Christmas.

Before Covid, my mom spent months in the ICU and a stepdown unit for respiratory patients with trach tubes. I saw how hard they all worked then, and I can't imagine how stressful it must be now. It was hard for the patients to communicate their needs, and the nurses often told us how much they appreciated her big smile. Her favorite nurse was named Dan. (I think he might have been Irish too.) He was able to understand her better than anyone and always kept an eye on her even if he wasn't assigned to her room. The aides were also fabulous. She knew all their stories by the time she left.

SouthWestZippy | 1538 comments Thank you very much Charlie and Nancy for sharing your stories and for showing interest in this book because of my review, my day has been made.

I have spent a lot of time in my lifetime in hospital waiting rooms and patients' rooms due to my family. Good Nurses are the go-to and sometimes figure it out before the Doctor. I have seen and heard a few things myself.
