Charles makes the sacrifice to save the town by taking the bomb out to sea where he also dies in the explosion. Why did he choose to do this?

The boat with the bomb was parked in the middle of the marina. It could potentially kill lots and lots of people. Charles knew they couldn't stop the bomb from going off in the short time they had. He knew someone would have to move the boat. He was the likely candidate since he would be dead in a matter of weeks anyway. This way he saved many people, and didn't have to lay and suffer with the pain. He also didn't have to make Joe and Kelly watch him die a slow, painful death.

Charles was in constant pain. The only release he was going to get was death. He just proved he was the hero he kept denying he was.

It also saved Joe from the promise to assist with the suicide.

Yes Agree with all above what a heroic act to do this even with the knowledge that you only have a few days/weeks left it would be still be hard to self sacrifice ones self.
