The album Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, and the artist that sings the songs on the album is Beyoncé Giselle Knowles also known as Queen Bee. When you listen to this album on Spotify, it contains thirteen songs. Also, it is forty-nine minutes and thirteen seconds long. The songs are “Pray You Catch Me, Hold Up, Don’t Hurt Yourself (feat. Jack White), Sorry, 6 Inch (feat. The Weekend), Daddy Lessons, Love Drought, Forward (feat. James Blake), Freedom (feat. Kendrick Lamar), All Night, Formation, and Sorry- Original Demo.” Overall, I feel that the album has a pleasant vibe Beyoncé created as each song almost sounds like a different genre of music. In Lemonade, you hear songs about loyalty, hate, betrayal, love, and power. Additionally, multiple songs on the album were released before the entire album was. The major songs that I remember included “Sorry, Formation, All Night, and Hold Up.” The music video for “Hold Up” was creative and colorful. On the other hand, although captivating and powerful, the music video for “Sorry” was more greyscale and featured tennis star, Serina Williams.
Furthermore, the songs can refer to someone who has done wrong or needs to discover their strength. “Don’t Hurt Yourself” features Jack White, an American songwriter, and when you listen to it, it gives you a rock feel. You get this by the tones in her voice and the song's use of a guitar that a rock artist possibly uses in their music, and the drums give off that energy as well. “Hold Up” gives off the feeling of confusion as she feels betrayed which can be seen in the music video and heard in the lyrics. “Pray You Catch Me” starts off kind of thrilling but changes into a somber and somewhat sad song. “6 Inch” features The Weekend talks about the worth and power of women. Also, it has moments of fast-paced tempo and tempos that are much slower. “Daddy Lessons” talks about a father’s request for his chid do before he is gone. Also, it has a country harmony to it, as it sounds like old country music played in the 60s.
The song “Sandcastles” almost sounds like a gospel song and moves you in countering way compared to the other songs. You can hear the pain in her voice that can bring you to tears. Like “Sandcastles,” “Forward” also, in my opinion, has a gospel tone to it. Even though it is the shortest song on the album, it still adds character to the "Lemonade" album. Freedom sounds like a protest against injustice around the globe, and personally, it seems like it could play over a protest scene in a movie. The song “All Night Long” is a song about love and passion. Moreover, “Formation” has a similar vibe that Sorry does since it is about girl power and taking what you deserve. Lastly, “Sorry- Original Demo” has a nice contrast with the song that was released to the public first as it is more upbeat and there is not as much bass. I do not think I have a favorite song on the album, but I like the sound of “Daddy Lessons” as I am not a country fan, but it makes me feel like I could be. I would give this album a 4.9 out of 5 as Beyoncé is one of my favorite artists, and her music makes you feel empowered.
