Ellie doesn't really know Grant at this stage so it makes sense she is cautious. I get she is really scared to tell him but I'm always surprised that characters don't go to the police when they are threatened. And try to deal with the criminals themselves.. it never works out well.
It didn't really feel as if she had any options for who she could tell at the time it happened. She wasn't portrayed as having friends to confide in. It was just her and her mom - along with being friends with the murdered couple. Yes, she met Grant a few times but not enough to trust. I like Lisa do wonder why people don't tell the police - granted she never saw the person that was in her car nor did she really hear his voice since he whispered so you couldn't fault her since what would she really be able to tell them.
Even though we know Grant through his thoughts, Ellie doesn't know him other than his infrequent visits when they met at the barbeques.
