Donnie seemed completely ruthless and unstable so I wouldn't necessarily believe anything that came out of his mouth. Although I guess it is possible as the reader has limited information at this early stage of the book.
Donnie was definitely unstable and warped. Easy to see him murdering Lee and Kate. That all was not well at the law firm as a possible avenue of suspicion. They weren't particularly likeable characters were they. I think Ellie did mention she put up with them because she needed the job.
