A minor quibble but ... when Flavia gets caught at the sanatorium (p 320), she says she's from "the Girl Scouts," and that "Brown Owl" assigned her the visit. That's a double goof. First, in Canada (as in England), it's Girl Guides, not Girl Scouts. And second, the leader of a Guide unit was at that time called Captain -- Brown Owl was the name for Brownie leaders.

I just started the book and I adore Flavia! It is interesting how often simple errors fly by editors. I always wonder if I should email the publisher/author to let them know--not knowing how easy or hard it would be to change the mistake.
Bradley is Canadian so I wonder if his publisher is *Americanizing* them much as JKRowling's American publisher did with Harry Potter?
I took it to be Flavia's spur of the moment ad-lib. She was guessing at the names and hoping it sounded "official" enough.

I think they forget that what readers absorb as children - even without full comprehension - stands them in good stead in later years by expanding their vocabulary and just giving them a foundation of knowledge of more than just the peanut-butter-and-jelly of American life!
Gabe,What did you not like about it? And had you read any of the previous books in the series and did you like them any better? Just curious.
Oops! My bad!(Is that Grommet I see there in your icon? He's got the right idea. Never says a word!)
