Let me just say, there's a lot of good Tolkien art out there! Also, be warned that I may or may not be able to resist posting art on here that's not only of The Hobbit, but of literally every other Tolkien book out there as well.

Anyway! Here's a thread for art for our BotM read!

Tara | 39 comments Not exactly in the realm of fan art, but The Art of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien by Wayne G. Hammond is simply gorgeous and is a nice addition to any Tolkien collection.

Oh, thanks! We own The Illustrated World of Tolkien and it's a bit weird, but ah well!

Tara | 39 comments If you're really into art, Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth is a must-have. I was lucky enough to get to see the Tolkien exhibit at the Morgan Library in NYC a few years ago, where they had examples of letters, early drafts, and his art work. Tre cool for any Tolkien fan!

Thank you!! I just took a look at it on Amazon and it's soooo expensive! Where did you buy your copy from?

message 6: by Tara (new) - added it

Tara | 39 comments I pre-ordered in on Amazon when it was released. It was less money then, but still rather pricey. Perhaps add to a wish list for Christmas or a birthday.
Books are my one vice and splurge, so every now and then I'll get something nice, although I mostly adore used books.

Oh, that is wonderful. I think I'm really wanting to start collecting some antique and/or collector's editions of books but haven't started yet. Do you do any of that?

Gracie | 315 comments Oh Lilyyy, I said this on the Hobbit General Discussion board, but I was able to find the collector’s edition of The Hobbit at my library! It’s super cool! There is something written in Elvish on the cover but I have no idea what it says 😂

Oh! Which collector's edition is it? I remember spending hours studying the different editions of Tolkien books instead of doing what I was supposed to do just "in preparation" for when I'm able to collect some of them XD

Gracie | 315 comments Lilyyy, I don’t know if it has a specific name but it’s green, with red border, and goldish lettering. It also has a picture on the front of what I think is probably the Misty Mountains. Oh and it came in a green box. I saw it on Amazon a couple weeks back.

Yes indeed. My husband and I started going to antiquarian book fairs a few years ago, and they are quite addicting. They are fun even just to look at the books, particularly the ones that way out your price range. I have several copies of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, although certainly not any first editions, those go for tens of thousands.

Okay that's the one I was thinking of! Maybe Ican help you figure out what printing it is! Does it say First/Second/Third Printing on the copyright page? Probably not, but just curious. Also, are the edges of the book speckled with green? Or are they all just tan/orange?

Also, does the copyright page have a Tolkien insignia at the bottom? You'll know what I'm talking about if there is. Sorry I'm so extra!

Wow, have you seen any of the first editions or printings at any of the fairs?

I cannot find anything saying first or second print, but the edges of the pages are speckled with green. I also do not see a Tolkien insignia anywhere.

Oh, well the green speckling means it's the trade edition instead of the Book Club Edition, which means it's more rare/valuable! Without it saying anything about the 1st/2nd/3rd printing and without the Tolkien insignia, it probably means that it's something between a 4th printing and a 12th or 13th printing.

Yes, moreso of The Lord of the Rings than The Hobbit, and never a first printing, first impression. Of course, the closer it is to a first impression, the more expensive it tends to be. All of the super pricey books are locked behind glass doors; I wouldn't have the nerve to thumb through them.
You can get a first edition of The Hobbit off of Amazon, but obviously it is a reproduction. But I wanted a copy of the beautiful dust jacket, as well as the original text, that I could afford. If ever I win the lottery, that is the first thing I'm going to buy!

True! I think one of my Goodreads friends did inherit a copy of The Hobbit from the 1930s from his grandparents. It makes me wish so bad I had a copy too 😭😭

Back then no one would have had an idea of its value either--they probably just saved it because they enjoyed it. Sadly no one else in my family reads Tolkien, so I have no family heirlooms to inherit.
