I used to be able to read over a 100 books a year but these darn migraines make it impossible to do that anymore.

Nicely done! I increased my goal twice this year and decided not to once I hit my last goal. Kind of nice seeing that extra percentage! 🙂

I did the popsugar challenge for several years but I stopped a couple of years ago. There were way too many prompts I had no interest in and I was dreading reading "to finish the challenge". But I do enjoy challenges. I found one called the 52 Book Club Challenge. I like the prompts and think I'm going to do that one this year.
You can do it, Teresa! 😄
I honestly don’t think I will finish the 2023 Popsugar challenge, but I’ve always been satisfied to finish 30-40, as I do most years. Still have mixed feelings on the “recycled” prompts. On one hand, it’s a great opportunity to read the books I meant to read last time a prompt was used, but at the same time I like seeing new prompts that maybe push/encourage me to read certain books/genres. I also like the prompts that help me read down Mount TBR.

I checked out the list. There are some interesting prompts on it. The one to which I would vehemently object is the requirement to read Octavia Butler. I just read a book by her this year for Popsugar, I have zero desire to read another. 😐

Sharon - Any reading is a definite win! And the great thing about these challenges is being able to make it your own. They should be guides to enhance and expand your reading. Hope you are encouraged to read more this year!
I have a tendency to let it bother me if I can't finish a challenge -- but I'm getting better about it. It helps my reading to have a plan or a challenge of some kind to move me along. Otherwise I stare at the TBR pile trying to decide what to read next. I have an internal mental conversation that resembles the crows from the old Jungle Book cartoon. "What do you want to read?" "I don't know. What do you think I should read?" And I wind up not reading anything. A challenge helps me know what to read next.
Teresa — I read Parable of the Sower for Popsugar. It was good, though a little too close to reality (or how the world is going anyway), but not a genre or author I want to read more of, even if I were able to find the sequel to Parable.
Sharon — As Teresa said, anything that gets you reading (or reading more) is a good thing. Though I will finish PS this year, most years I have only completed 30-45 of the prompts and have been satisfied. I’ve also found that it is possible to get at least half of those in one genre if you’re not usually a cross-genre reader. Pick the prompts with which you are most comfortable and make it your own.
Also, while some people tend to be “purists” and follow a prompt as worded, some do twist it a bit to expand options. I may do this with the “read a book based on a movie” prompt. While I think I still have The Pirate Movie and Willow, I may expand it to “based on a TV series” for more options (Charmed, Psych, Monk, Murder She Wrote, etc). Do what works best for you.

Happy new year!
I hope everyone was able to meet their 2022 reading goals. I far exceeded my original goal and actually increased it twice during the year. I finished the year with 154/140. While I didn’t do as much reading in December as hoped, I did complete multiple challenges, so can’t complain.
* Finished the December mini challenge (barely!)
* Finished the Popsugar Reading Challenge (50/50)
* Finished the Around the Year Challenge (52/52)
* Finished the Buzzword Challenge (12/12)
* I completed four Catching up with the Classics group challenges:
— Expand Your Horizons: Read 6 new-to-you authors (read more than 24)
— 2022 Group Reads/At least 12 (I read 26/52)
— Member’s Choice (read 12/12)
— Short Story Challenge/At least 24 (I read 259)
I also did the Classic Bingo challenge and was two squares shy of a blackout, so definitely a win there.
As for reading stats, I read 88 print books, 46 ebooks, and listened to 20 audiobooks.
Most-read genres:
— Short Stories: 259
— Cozy Mysteries: 44
— Children/YA: 33
— Classics: 25
Least read genres:
— Plays/Poetry: 6
— SciFi/Fantasy: 6
— Nonfiction: 8
I was surprised to see I read 8 nonfiction. That’s more than I thought, LOL.
Does anyone else have end of the year progress or stats they would like to share?

I'm looking forward to participating in some more year-long challenges - in 2022 I feel like I found challenges I liked but it was halfway through the year and I wasn't able to really commit. I'd love to read the same amount or more this year!

Thank you so much, Heather.

In other challenges I am at 49/50 for Popsugar and 51/52 for AtY — one of my planned reads for December will fulfill both, so yay! The 2023 Popsugar list was posted yesterday and there are mixed feelings on it. Half the prompts are from past challenges. One one hand, that makes it easy to look at past challenge lists or listopias to see what I had as options and what I might want to read this year. On the other hand, people are grumbling about the repetition and the fact there are a couple duplicate prompts — there are two rereads and two friend recs. One prompt I (and many others) was not happy to see again was longest book by page count in your TBR pile. I really don’t want to read a 1000-page book next year. I may cheat a bit on that one and choose a book between 500-700 pages. We shall see.
I have also read ten short stories last month, for a grand total of 250. I’ll be below last year’s number, but I’ll be happy if I can manage at least ten this month. (I was just shy of 300 last year.)
Has anyone else finished their challenge? Getting close? In need of encouragement? Let us know how you’re doing!
