kubelot | 109 comments Reading Neujahr in German. Starts interesting and seems to be a fast read

kubelot | 109 comments I'm done. The read wasn't as fast as expected...
Really enjoyed the novel, a solid 4. I found it really captivating and enjoyable, I mostly liked the way how the tension was raised, but also the descriptions of nature and surroundings.
It was the perfect book to come down from all the christmas joy ;)

Well, I’m a grinch and don’t do Xmas joy - I usually escape to the Canaries to avoid all that. But you know- the pandemic being what it is, I’m grounded until … whenever. So Zeh delivered my “festive” Canarian escape. Pleased to report that, despite the misery of the novel, which essentially consists of two set-pieces, she hasn’t put me off!

A solid 4* for me too.

Penelope | 167 comments What an amazing book. I was suffering from anxiety for about three quarters of it. I did enjoy very much just the same.

Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments She is rather good, isn’t she? Have you read any of her other books?

kubelot | 109 comments I've read Adler und Engel last year, it was totally different both the story and the style, but also dark and imho 4*. will for sure read more from her, perhaps all ;)

Penelope | 167 comments I have Empty Hearts by Juli Zeh which I have started, mainly because I thought that was the group read. Will certainly look for other title now. A friend on Goodreads just described New Year as mesmerizing. Perfect description I thought.

Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments Kubelot - I have a soft spot for Eagles and Angels as it was the first of hers I read.

Penelope - I have Wild Hearts on the shelves. Will read soonish ….

Christiane - Zeh is a fav of mine, and she’s good for an entertaining thought-provoking read, though I wouldn’t put her on as high a pedestal as Erpenbeck, for instance. I’m beginning to think I’ll have to read Unterleuten in German. Not a whiff of a translation in the offing …
