I read Independence Square by Martin Cruz Smith Smith is an American, but the series is set in Russia. If you are an animal lover, you would not like the graphic description of the bears being butchered.
Wilderness crime fans might like this book. Animal lovers would not.

I read Righteous Strife: How Warring Religious Nationalists Forged Lincoln's Union by Richard Carwardine It is not a mystery, but a scholarly book on how religious denominations reacted to the civil war, slavery and secession. I read Somewhere Toward Freedom: Sherman's March and the Story of America's Largest Emancipation by Bennett Parten It covers an overlooked aspect of Sherman's March to the sea in the US Civil war. This march broke the back of the Confederate war effort. But enslaved people fleeing plantations and attaching themselves to Sherman's army played a vital role in the success of the march. Stephen McCarthy | 54 comments I read Gallipoli 1915 by Tim Travers over recent weeks. It is a more scholarly examination on the reasons behind the Allied failure and Turkish response. It is balanced and well argued but leaves enough for the reader to ponder.
