Groovy Lee What did you do for Art Day, Kristie, Christine? Did anyone else celebrate it?

message 52: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I was hoping to have some time to do some painting or something, but didn't get around to it. I did some crocheting, but that probably doesn't count towards art. lol I'm starting a watercolor class in a couple of weeks, so that should be fun, though a little late to celebrate the holiday it will still make my heart happy. :)

message 53: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Today is Chinese New Years, National Freedom Day, No Politics Day, which I love and think everyone needs to celebrate occasionally, and my personal favorite, Spunky Old Broads Day.

message 54: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Feb 01, 2022 03:21PM) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Tomorrow is Candlemas, which is the last holiday of the Christmas season for Christians. It coincides with the annual blessing of candles used by the church.

It is also Ground Hog Day, which I do not like anymore because of poor Punxsutawney Phil. They surround his home with lights and cameras and people. He sees his shadow 9 out of 10 times...well of course he does! I'd run back to bed too. Poor Phil.

Here's some Groundhog Day trivia for you: https://holidayinsights.com/holiday-f...

message 55: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments An interesting tidbit I just learned is that Groundhog Day is based on Candlemas. Here's a poem for you:

If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Winter has another flight.
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
Winter will not come again.

Thats cool, Kristie. I couldn't figure out the water dynamics in that particular form. Acrylics and oils are easier for me.

message 57: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments I agree, I feel bad for the poor Groundhog. Plus they said it's only accurate 50% of the time. Seems kind of wrong to continue on that tradition just for the sake of tradition I think..

message 58: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I figured I'd give it a try, Leena. I also have some acrylics and oils in my art supplies.

When my grandson was staying with us when the schools first closed for Covid, we were participating in his art classes online so we ended up trying a few different things. One of his projects was watercolors. We just used the kids trays for those, but it was fun to try to get the colors to do what you wanted them to.

message 59: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I agree, Jojo. It doesn't make much sense, but it seems to be a very big deal for some people. It's what Punxsutawney, PA is famous for. so I'm sure they wouldn't want to give it up.

message 60: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments I didn’t do nothing for Art Day Groovy and oh ok Kristie and I’m sure crocheting is art Kristie and oh that’s cool Kristie and it’s never too late to celebrate the holiday Kristie and your a very positive person Kristie and thanks for sharing the holiday updates Kristie

message 61: by Groovy (last edited Feb 02, 2022 11:29AM) (new)

Groovy Lee I still can't believe that in the 21st century, they're still following this tradition of predicting weather by looking to a groundhog. And from what I've read, he's only been correct 1/3 of the time since they first started this.

But he does get fed very well for his participation.

Have fun at your watercolor classes, Kristie.

And I agree, Christine, I think crocheting is art in a different way.

message 62: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Excellent! I'll take it. My art for the day was crocheting. :)

message 63: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments I agree with you Groovy and I agree with you Groovy and I never knew that Groovy and I’m so happy that you agree with me Groovy

message 64: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Today is Boy Scout Day. Boy Scouts all around America will be celebrating the birthday of the Scouts which started in 1910. The Boy Scout motto is "Be Prepared" and their slogan is "Do a good turn daily." Certainly good things to be teaching our children.

It is also Kite Flying Day. This must be a holiday for our Australian friends! I think it is far too cold here for this activity in February. I hope someone gets to celebrate this one. Seems like a fun way to spend some time.

message 65: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Tomorrow is National Pizza Day! That is one that I would like to celebrate! But, probably won't lol. Figured I'd mention it now so all the pizza lovers can plan an easy dinner tomorrow.

message 66: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments Thanks for sharing all of those holiday stuff Kristie and I love pizza Kristie

Awww! I have two kitties. They are black and white tuxedo and their names are Otis and Otto. Anyone else have kitties?

message 69: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I have a black and white cat too, Jojo. Her name is Kita. :)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments I don’t like cats Kristie

message 71: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Christine, you make me laugh sometimes:) Straight to the point and say it loud. I think cats are BEAUTIFUL, but on the other hand...

message 72: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Hahaha

message 73: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I also have 3 dogs. lol Do you like dogs, Christine?

message 74: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments We just got a puppy recently and she has been trying to play with our two cats. One of the cats has gotten feed up with being treated like a chew toy and has gone into stalking attack mode towards the puppy. So now we are armed with a spray bottle to break-up fights while working at teaching the puppy some good manners. I swear animals are just like kids sometimes!

message 75: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Dogs are intelligent. And I admire their loyalty. I absolutely love puppies. It would be nice if they stayed small and cute. But that's just me.

message 76: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Oh no, JoJo! lol That sounds a bit chaotic.

We have a variety of pets. We have three dogs - an 11 year old shih tzu mix, a 5 year old whippet / daschund mix, and a 1 year old Shepard / lab mix. Plus, we have the 7 year old cat. We are fortunate that being all different sizes and ages, plus cats & dogs, that they all get along.

Our mistake was getting a big puppy after the small dogs. It is much easier to do in reverse. We had to teach the puppy very quickly to be gentle with the others because she was bigger than them at only a few months (maybe 3 months?) old.

Groovy, the puppies are super cute and lovable, but they are a lot of work too. Just like babies. You want them to stay small forever, but it is so much easier once they are a little older.

Kristie | 5928 comments Today is the first day of March! March is National Craft Month. I will definitely be participating in that! :) I love creating.

It is also National Celery Month! Who knew celery had its own month?

There are quite a few holidays celebrated today. It is Mardi Gras / Fat Tuesday, which can be a big celebration for many people. Is anyone celebrating this year?

It is also National Pig Day, Peace Corps Day, Peanut Butter Lovers' Day (Yum!), Plan a Solo Vacation Day, and World Compliment Day. I managed to participate in Peanut Butter Lovers' Day and World Compliment Day before I knew I was celebrating!

message 78: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments hmmm...celery with peanut butter? add raisins for a little fun "Ant's on a Log" treat/snack. : )

message 79: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I had apples with peanut butter yesterday. :) Yum! I've just discovered this about a year or so ago.

message 80: by Groovy (last edited Mar 02, 2022 11:02AM) (new)

Groovy Lee You're right, Kristie. They are like children. Too much energy for me:)
I guess I celebrate National Craft Month all year long with my love of crocheting. And celery? Don't get me started...

message 81: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee It's World Book Day and National Snack Day. M&M's, Oreos, and Ritz crackers being the number one go-to for snacks. I love these two celebrations. The former is good for the mind. The latter is why I have a problem.

message 82: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments I love making people laugh Groovy and I always say what’s on my mind Groovy and oh ok Groovy and lol your funny Kristie lol and oh that’s cool Kristie and I love dogs Kristie and thanks for sharing all of those holidays Kristie and I love World Book Day and I love National Snack Day Groovy

Kristie | 5928 comments Tomorrow is Dentist's Day, Namesake Day, National Frozen Food Day, and National Oreo Cookie Day. It seems strange to me to celebrate National Oreo Cookie Day on the same day as Dentist's Day. I wonder which started first?

message 84: by Karin (last edited Mar 05, 2022 11:32AM) (new)

Karin Back before I became allergic to nuts (after I had my kids) these are some of the things I ate peanut butter with. Bear in mind that I got really into natural foods as a teen when we spent a year in San Francisco (we also lived there for a couple of year when I was a kid), but only the first sandwich was invented there.

Yes, celery (the only way I liked it, and of course better with raisins
Yes, apples

Other things:
As a teen when I could eat as many calories as I wanted (not fair, but I was tall and growing like crazy) I invented a peanut butter, alfalfa sprouts and walnut sandwich. Word got out and it ended up on the menu of a restaurant later that school year (no credit and I couldn't care less, I was just excited that others I told about it liked it.

Cheese. Yes, you read that right. When I first saw someone eat it with cheese I was appalled, but I still had a good metabolism and I wasn't a snacker. I started eating peanut butter, cheese, raisin and sprout sandwiches.

Once I got pregnant and had kids, I became more of a "normal" women with size, weight and how much I can eat. Then I became allergic to many more foods :(

message 85: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments Unfortunately it's just a natural process that as you get older your metabolism slows down. I used to be the same as a teen, I could eat anything and not gain weight. My daughter is the same way. Since it is National Frozen Food Day though that made me think of the gelato that is in my freezer, so I'm eating that now ; p

Karin JoJo_theDoDo wrote: "Unfortunately it's just a natural process that as you get older your metabolism slows down. I used to be the same as a teen, I could eat anything and not gain weight. My daughter is the same way. S..."

This is very true. And to be honest, I still have a decent metabolism for my age, but I have to be careful how much I eat. I use a scale and weigh out what I eat. I have many allergies, etc, and almost everything I eat is unprocessed so I do this.

Now I am learning to cook for my husband who is prediabetic and has to lose weight--he's not even big! He is packing extra weight that he put on in the past 10 years or so, but not that much compared to some of our friends who are healthy. It was a shock to both of us, so now I'm buying sugar free bread, Fibre One English muffins, sugar free yogurt, cooking new recipes, etc.

message 87: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Oh, I remember those days. Eat what you want, how much you want, and not worry about where the fat and calories were going, skinny and tall. I miss those days. Then I became a mother and my metabolism was shot. I think I'm going to cry....

Groovy Lee It's National Women's Day!!

Karin Groovy wrote: "It's National Women's Day!!"

I just looked it up and have a lot more respect for this holiday--it's not what I thought.

This is a South African Holiday from an event in 1956 where 20,000 women of all races did a protest in Pretoria--here's more about it https://nationaltoday.com/national-wo...

Groovy Lee Thanks for that, Karin.

message 94: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Someone forgot to mention it's National Pie Day! Yummmmm...

And I think it's crush-a-can day, too. Not sure.

message 95: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Yes it is! My friend made cookies in the shape of π today. :)

message 96: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments It is also Learn about Butterflies Day and National Potato Chip Day.

A couple of interesting butterfly facts to celebrate:

🦋 The original name for Butterfly was Flutterby.

🦋 Butterflies taste with their feet.

message 97: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Flutterby is so cute. I think I'm going to use that from now on.

message 98: by Karin (last edited Mar 15, 2022 10:51AM) (new)

Karin Yes, butterflies taste primarily with their feet! This is so they can taste a flower as soon as they land on it. Some can also taste with their proboscis. (I did a minor in animal biology, including a course on insects)

Sadly, as much as I have always loved the idea of the name originally having been flutterby, it might be true, but it might not be (still, it's a cool word!!):
https://www.etymonline.com/word/butte...

Yes, I find etymology interesting now and then :). Sometimes it explains why we have homonyms (different spellings but the same sound) and homophones (same spelling but radically different meanings).

Groovy Lee You learn something new every day and knowledge is power. Two important phrases that have just been proven true. Thanks Kristi and Karin.

Agreed! Although sometimes I feel like party pooper when I come and bust a fun story. In this case I only cast doubt as it's not certain.
