Kristie | 5928 comments Happy New Year, everyone!

I meant to start this thread on January 1st, but oops! In addition to New Year's Day, January 1st is National Hangover Day. I guess that shouldn't be too surprising! lol

I hope you all have an amazing 2022. Can't wait to see which interesting 'holidays' pop up in this thread.

Kristie | 5928 comments Today is International Stop Spam Day, which I can appreciate! It is also Run up the Flagpole and See if Anyone Salutes Day and World Introvert Day.

I never knew there was a special day for introverts. I'm betting we have some introverts in the group! Want to know more about your special day? You can learn about it here: https://www.holidayinsights.com/moreh...

I am definitely an Introvert! Thanks for starting this thread, I enjoyed seeing Christine posting the various random holidays. I'd like to see other members share about international holidays that they celebrate and we don't here in the US. Always interested in learning more!

Kristie | 5928 comments I feel like I missed an opportunity here. Yesterday (Jan 3rd) was Festival of Sleep Day! I think it would have been the perfect day for a nap. :)

It was also Fruitcake Toss Day and Humiliation Day. I don't think I'd like to celebrate either of those. lol

message 5: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Jan 04, 2022 03:11PM) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Today is National Spaghetti Day! I think I can celebrate this one! Making some chicken parmigiana and pasta for dinner. Anyone else?

It is also Trivia Day. Anyone have an interesting bit of trivia they'd like to share?

Here's my trivia question that I just found -
Q: Who was the Hogwarts' headmaster right before Dumbledore?
A:(view spoiler)

If you're interested in finding more interesting trivia facts, you can check out this page: https://www.randomtriviagenerator.com/#/ It reminds me of the old Trivial Pursuit game. Anyone remember that?

message 6: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Today is National Bird Day.

Tomorrow (Jan 6th) is Bean Day and Cuddle Up Day. It is pretty cold here right now, cuddling up sounds good to me. I think I will plan to cuddle up with a cozy blanket, my dogs, and a book tomorrow. That sounds perfect to me. :)

message 7: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 580 comments this is so cool. thanks Kristie, it brought a smile to read "Run up the flagpole to see if someone salutes "day. that's so random. this is going to be my fav thread of the year.

message 8: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments You're welcome, JoJo & Leena! Glad you're enjoying it. It really is funny to see some of the random holidays people have come up with.

message 9: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Jan 7 - Yesterday was Old Rock Day. I'm not sure how to celebrate that. lol The site says it is "an opportunity to enjoy and appreciate old rocks and fossils." They suggest starting a rock collection or going "in search of old fossils" or playing "with old rocks." None of those activities intrigue me in the least.

Jan 8 - Today, however is Bubble Bath Day, which sounds like a much better holiday to celebrate! It is also Male Watcher's Day! I don't know about this one... Maybe I'll just stare awkwardly at my hubby as he goes about his business. lol Should be good for a laugh at least.

Jan 9 - Tomorrow is Play God Day. The website suggests doing "something good that will make a difference." Hmm... I think every day is a good day for doing something good and spreading kindness. I think we should all celebrate this one with a random act of kindness. :)

message 10: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 580 comments I like the Male Watcher's Day. hmm seeing it late, I'll have to postpone it for tomorrow. Since I need to play god anyways. :)

Collecting rocks and fossils was a little hobby that I used to enjoy with my Dad when I was a kid. So that holds fond memories for me. I think today I will "Be a Goddess" and treat myself kindly ; )

message 12: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Jojo, after rereading my comment I think I came across not how I intending. I probably should have tacked on "at the moment" to the end of my last sentence about old rock day. I think as a kid playing with rocks and searching for fossils was fun and even as a career it would be great, but since I am unlikely to find anything really interesting in just one day of searching it seems like a waste of my time. I don't plan to start a new hobby at the moment, though I think it is actually a very interesting hobby for a lot of people. I do know someone who will show me her rocks as an adult collector and I find them interesting when she tells me about them.

Also, I completely understand the sentimentality around things we used to do with our dads. For me that was wood working and fixing things. I love the feeling of completing a repair and remembering my time with my dad and knowing that he'd be so proud of me if saw what I just fixed. :)

Hope you have something enjoyable planned for tomorrow!

Yesterday I went to Book Club meet-up at my library with my husband. He listens to audiobooks with me and once a month we treat book club meet up like a date. We either have breakfast before the meeting or we have lunch afterwards. It's definitely been a nice way to ensure we get a little date in at least once a month.

Hope you all had a enjoyable weekend! : )

message 14: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Oh, that is enjoyable! Sounds like a wonderful time. :)

message 15: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Getting tomorrow's up a little early:

January 10th is Bittersweet Chocolate Day and Houseplant Appreciation Day. I can definitely celebrate this one as my houseplants can use a bit of TLC. Time to give them some food and water and attention.

It is also Peculiar People Day. The site says, “Today is a day to look for the good in your peculiar acquaintances.” I'll always accept an opportunity and a reminder to look for the good in people. Or perhaps you are the 'peculiar' one? In that case, happy Peculiar People Day to you! lol

I also found Clean Off Your Desk Day and Cut Your Energy Costs Day.

message 16: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments January 11 was Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day This could be fun. Here’s a morse code chart if you’d like to give it a try.

It was also Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friend's Day. This sounds fun, but I don’t think my friends would appreciate being splashed in January. It is too cold this time of year around here. It is definitely something I’d prefer to celebrate in the spring or summer. Maybe some of our Aussie friends will participate?

message 17: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Jan 12, 2022 11:46AM) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Today is National Hot Tea Day! I am definitely going to participate in this. I think I'll be having green tea today.

It is also National Pharmacist Day. So, pick up those prescriptions and be sure to thank your pharmacist.

Finally, it is National Take the Stairs Day. Maybe not the funnest holiday, but I'm sure it will help with physical health for anyone that consistently takes the elevator.

message 18: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I'm going to post a couple ahead, since I seem to keep forgetting to do it on time. :)

Tomorrow, Jan 13th, is International Skeptics Day. I had no idea there was a day to celebrate skeptical people. Hope all the skeptics in the group have a wonderful day!

Make Your Dream Come True Day. Here's a day for us all to work towards our goals. Good thing I posted this one before the day rather than after. lol Though, hopefully everyone is doing this more frequently. I am planning to go to yoga tomorrow, so that will be participating by working towards my health goals. I'm sure I'll do a few other things to attain other goals as well. Anyone else participating?

National Rubber Duckie Day . This is a fun one! Anyone celebrating this one?

message 19: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Jan 12, 2022 11:57AM) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments January 14th will be Dress Up Your Pet Day! :) That should be cute. I don't really dress up my pets, but I do have two smaller dogs that get cold this time of year. If they go outside for any length of time, they will likely have sweaters on. How about you?

message 20: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee It's Winnie The Pooh Day. My favorite bear.

message 21: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Aww, that's so sweet! I didn't know there was a Winnie the Pooh day! :)

message 22: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Tomorrow is National Popcorn Day! Yum! 😋

message 23: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments Aww! Winnie the Pooh day! That is very Tiggerific! : )

I need to get some more butter to make homemade popcorn. I make it the old fashioned way on the stove. We don't own a microwave...

message 24: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I've become so dependent on my microwave now. I'd have a difficult time going back to not having one. I remember making popcorn on the stovetop though. My dad always preferred his that way.

message 25: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 580 comments I love popcorn either way.
Winnie the Pooh day!! no other character can lay stake to a full day in his honour. Hes just fantabulistic!!

This one is one of my fav pooh quotes
IF YOU LIVE TO BE A HUNDRED THEN I HOPE TO LIVE TO A HUNDRED MINUS ONE, SO THAT I NEVER HAVE TO LIVE A DAY WITHOUT YOU.

message 26: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments He has so many wonderful quotes. I think his most famous is probably, "You're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."

I also like, "People say doing nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day." lol So cute.

And of course, one of my favorites, "Any day spent with you is my favorite day." I can completely relate to this. Being with the right person can make everything better.

message 27: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 580 comments I absolutely agree. and then there's dear Piglet. what a friend to have and keep forever.

message 28: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 580 comments have you read the The Tao of Pooh and The Teh of the Piglet?? I'd read this some decades back and I was simply blown.. I wonder how I'll react to it now

message 29: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I read The Tao of Pooh, but didn't enjoy it at all and I was quite disappointed as I had high hopes for it. I tried it twice, but it just wasn't for me.

message 30: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Who remembers Jiffy Pop, the foiled skillet with popcorn inside and you shake it over a hot eye on the stove? That was fun!

Let's not forget Eore's favorite quote: "Oh Dear. Oh My."--LOL

message 31: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Oh, Eeyore. 🖤 Gloomy, old, Eeyore.

message 32: by Leena (new)

message 33: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Today is National Cheese Lover Day, so if you love cheese today is the day to eat those cheesy foods.

It is also Penguin Awareness Day, which is a day to learn about and celebrate penguins. Get out your black and white clothes today. :)

Penguin fact in honor of the day: Penguins do not fly. Rather, they walk, or waddle their way to and from.

message 34: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Tomorrow is National Hugging Day so start stretching out those arms today! lol

It is also Squirrel Appreciation Day. I know squirrels can be annoying for bird feeders and gardeners, but I find them adorable. Today is a day to learn something new about squirrels and give them a little treat.

Squirrel fact in honor of the day: Squirrels can smell food under a foot of snow. Want more squirrel facts? This blog posted 10: https://blog.nwf.org/2015/01/10-nutty...

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments I love cheese and I’ve never seen a penguin before and I love hugging people and I don’t like squirrels

message 36: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 580 comments I love penguins. I'd seen this very documentary on penguins where they show how the respective families reunite.

message 37: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments Oh that’s cool Leena and oh that’s cool Leena

message 38: by Leena (last edited Jan 20, 2022 06:44AM) (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 580 comments It was amazing and it had this scene where one of the daddy penguins who seemed to have strayed from the entire group was surrounded by 5 hump back whales and they literally are toying with him, tossing him and catching him. It was pretty traumatic and squashed all benign opinions regarding the whales. The highlight was the penguin escapes and reaches the shore.
So, my hero the penguin.

message 39: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Oh thank goodness. I was very concerned for that penguin reading your post! That documentary sounds interesting, Leena. I'm not sure I want to watch that bit though.

message 40: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments I wouldn’t like to watch a documentary about a penguin

message 41: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 580 comments Ill look it up and post the link here. But probably be next week.

Kristie | 5928 comments Today was Fun at Work Day! So, I hope you all had a good day! It is also National Kazoo Day, which I did not celebrate, but it sounds like fun.

Tomorrow will be National Puzzle Day. I would like to celebrate this one, but won't be able to. Maybe I'll celebrate on Sunday instead?

It is also National Corn Chip Day and National Seed Swap Day.

message 44: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments I had a good day Kristie and I don’t have a kazoo Kristie and I don’t do puzzles Kristie and I’ve never had corn chips Kristie and I’ve never heard of National Seed Swap Day Kristie

message 45: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I enjoy puzzles, Christine. I have a little card table set up that I keep one on.

I don't own a kazoo either, but I had one as a child, just a cheap little plastic one. It was fun though and I don't think you can be grumpy while using a kazoo. I just don't think it would work.

I have had corn chips (tortilla chips) before and I like them. I know Fritos chips are somewhat popular as well, but they're not a favorite of mine.

message 46: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Tomorrow seems like a fun day for holidays. It will be Backward Day, Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day, and Inspire Your Heart with Art Day.

The first Backward Day occurred on January 31, 1962! Tomorrow is the 60 year anniversary of the holiday and you can celebrate by doing something backwards. Walk backwards, read backwards, put your clothes on backwards...it all up to you!

message 47: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments Oh that’s cool Kristie and oh that’s cool Kristie and oh ok Kristie and oh ok Kristie and oh ok Kristie and I agree with you Kristie and I agree with you Kristie and oh that’s cool Kristie and oh ok Kristie and all of those are great holidays Kristie and thanks for sharing that information Kristie

Groovy Lee We celebrate Bubble Wrap day all through the year. My daughter and I have so much fun pulling them out of the boxes and popping them. It's addictive:)

Okay, who's going to walk, read, and dress backwards? Was it fun?

message 49: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Yes, everyone should appreciate bubble wrap! lol

I may try to Inspire Your Heart with Art Day. :)

message 50: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments I agree with you Groovy and oh that’s cool Groovy and I’m going to be reading and I’m not going to be walking and dressing backwards Groovy and it’s not fun for me Groovy and lol your funny Kristie lol
