Volume 2 definitely dials back the pain of the end of Volume 1 a bit, but don't grow complacent... death is permanent, for the most part, in this series, unless there's a strong reason for it not to be, like the Antinium Option...

TV rules still apply, I guess... if the death doesn't explicitly happen onscreen, maybe they secretly survived until you see the body...

I actually think it's like a music album companion piece to Gravesong... Gravesong is set in the Innverse and is separate from the Wandering Inn storyline (and I think is intended as a new potential entry point for new readers that isn't as daunting as Wandering Inn)... the MC of Gravesong is an actor/singer, so I assume it's an album of some of her songs, or covers of real songs since if they're like Erin, they're taking advantage of Earth culture in Innworld...

I'm not sure if the MC of Gravesong is the [Pop Star] mentioned a few times in Wandering Inn in later volumes... that person is on Terandria or the other continent...

EDIT: I checked the wiki, and yea... she's [Humble Actor] from the group chat at the beginning of volume 2...

In between Dungeon Crawler Carl, I decided to pick this up on a recommendation from Iain.

(view spoiler)[I've read 1.00 and 1.01, and so far while it's, obviously, a little slow I've enjoyed these 2 chapter so far. The prose is also kinda odd in some places, making me wonder if its the character's personality popping through or just an odd choice by the author.

For example, in 1.00, the line "The bar was long enough to accommodate at least twenty people at a time…or fifteen if they were picky about elbow room." could be a subtle showing of Erin being a generally pessimistic person, since it's more natural to start with the lower number and say the higher number next. But I also don't have a lot of characterization from Erin so far, so that could also just be me interpreting it in a different way than intended.

I hope to see more solid worldbuilding in the coming chapters, as I severely want to know how this world works. Not just with the RPG mechanics, but also physics wise. Is the world larger than earth, and that's why the clouds are much bigger? Why is the land so oddly steep in this area? Why are the colors like this? I'm much more personally interested in stories that explore and answer these kinds of questions. I like hard magic systems versus soft magic systems.

Overall, it's piqued my interest slightly. (hide spoiler)]

My Volume 1 re-read kinda became a real thing... read about 1/3 so far...

Thoughts on third read-through:

Worth noting to new readers: maybe my memory is faulty, but I think the author eases off on so much internal monologuing in later volumes as they grow as a writer... (chapters also get alot longer, so they generally start running until the end of an event, instead of pausing in the middle of Erin dealing with Acid Flies or Rock Crabs, as I noticed happening in the early chapters)...

More a note for re-readers and changing opinions of characters: (view spoiler)[the more times I re-read the series, and the more knowledge I have from later volumes, the less I like/love Klbkch... he kinda becomes one of my least favorite important Antinium... it also makes his initial interactions with Erin seem out of character and convenient to the story... maybe it's just that I love Pawn and Bird and the others so much more, and the cast grows tremendously... but he's a bit of a killjoy, constantly having to kill aberrations and stomp on Pawn's parade... not much room for benefit of the doubt... Near the end of my Volume 1 re-read... I forgot how unlikeable Ryoka is in book 1... but it feeds into one of the big things about the series, that opinions change so drastically about so many characters, over time...

It also made me think about, (view spoiler)[how all the Earthers are lucky they don't rely on medication to survive... Ryoka seems like she could use some anti-depressants or bipolar meds, but it's not like insulin or blood pressure medications, where surviving without them can be impossible, not just hard... Chapters 1.02-1.18

(view spoiler)[Near the end of this section of the first book, around 1.13, I think, the story and writing started to pick up a little bit. I really enjoyed the character work and growth that happened through through the Goblin Chieftan arc. That being said, I could done without the grotesque things the chieftan would have done to Erin. The death of the chieftan might have hit harder as it happened if that stuff was never mentioned. I didn't think anything of it as it happened, but the chapter afterwards was what really hooked me.

I'm glad we got a whole chapter to explore Erin's thoughts and feelings about what she had to do. A lot of other fantasy stories might make the mistake of making death not a big deal, but I like that it has a tremendous weight to it here.

The journey to getting to this point, though, was pretty uninteresting, and the talking out loud that Erin does is tremendously goofy. I can't really take it seriously. I wish it was a more consistent inner monologue rather than outloud speeches.

I'm still not clear what Erin's life was like before she got transported to this world. I'd thought she was a shut-in type, because I interpreted several things as her not getting out of her house often. By now, I think I'm wrong about that, but that also leaves her with no real characterization that I can see, other than chess and pacifism.

I like some of the side characters. Klb is all around great, Pisces is a great foil to Erin and I like their dynamic, and I wish Relc would go away and never return. He's supremely gross to read. I always get ick from him.

I'm excited to continue the book now that it's picking up a bit. The next chapter is an R chapter, so I get to find out what that means. (hide spoiler)]

Not necessarily about Pisces, but I would caution about feeling one way or another completely about any of the characters. These books are long and we see a ton of changes in all of them. We get to experience all sides of the characters. So you might love them at one point and hate them at another.

Hmm... one more... not quite a warning... keep in mind that these books definitely follow the "if you don't see a body they might not be dead" rule... and in the Innverse, even a body doesn't necessarily mean that they are dead forever--though enough people DO die in big heart-wrenching tragic ways that that isn't something to rely upon, which is honestly the best way. Every death hurts. Every person we think who was dead, and who shows up again... those few lucky situations hit really well. Pirateaba does a really good job of balancing, and it doesn't feel overdone... in fact--they are never without consequences, which makes it a two-edged sword....
