My talks of the ending kinda scared you guys away for awhile... it's super emotional/exhilarating ending...
Spoiler for the future, when we get back to the Inn/people, to cheer you up a bit: (view spoiler)
And... everything about this series is the best... dozens/hundreds of characters to love...
I think Niers meeting Erin is like a comedy of errors/timing in Inspector Gadget... still a ways away :D

Looking forward to Wind Runner in January... and Titan of Baleros in March...
Those were the times/dates I listed in the Vagabond thread, awhile back...

Nobody else has read Wind Runner yet, I don't think... I was going to do it in September when it came out, but was so overbooked I never got to it, so I've managed to wait for Nirkatze & Emily to finally read Tears of Liscor this week/month...
We've kinda started a number of LitRPGs and Cultivation series in the past few months, randomly, so we're planning to continue a bunch of them in 2024 and cycle between them... and some adjacent stuff like Vigor Mortis and House Witch / Burning Witch (if they get to Princess of Potential at some point)...
We're doing Beware of Chicken 3 in December and Dungeon Crawler Carl through the first half of 2024...
I'm kinda hoping to see an announcement for the one after Titan of Baleros, for April/May, sooner than later...

There's always so much going on in this series... it's great... and you get lulled by the cozy, that you don't expect the dark/harsh/etc...

Yeah I took a few breaks during this too. Sooo much tension! (view spoiler)
Laken got a pretty easy start to the Wandering Innverse, honestly... until these events, he didn't really stumble much, I don't think... his Earth knowledge and acceptance of the leveling system served him well... I think these past couple books were a growing moment, to watch out for manipulation and political intrigue more...

I'm a little lost on the whole aftermath... if anyone has a summary of who died and who survived, who is scattered where, I'd love that... (view spoiler)
Excited for Wind Runner... and glad that the audio publications are still going steady... glad we've got two more before we run out...
It seems like we get three a year if we're lucky... Spring, Summer/Fall, Winter...
We consistently get 3-4 a year now...
I don't have much to say on aftermath... been too long... just the spoiler I gave Emily above about who Laken healed (view spoiler)
Alot of treasured goblins died, and I don't think anyone else really important did?... but (view spoiler)

It was a little less tense, and I think the goblins will get a bit of a breather for now (view spoiler)

The wiki lacks volume by volume book detail, but has alot of stuff on a variety of character pages (but you need to know which characters to search for)...
It also has character lists and stuff for each chapter, and sometimes summaries?
This is the page for chapter 5.62, the last chapter of Volume 5, before the epilogue, and it lists a bunch of deceased goblins...

Rabbiteater is one of the ones I'm most curious to see evolve, from the things I've spoiled online... from what I know (view spoiler)

All of the main goblins that evolved at the Inn with Erin have cool story lines.
I'll probably do a re-read of the series in 2024. I stopped during Vol8 web releases. 🤔

Was just trying to convince Charlie to join us in another thread...

I tried to get Charlie on-board too I think... everybody really... the hardest selling point is the word count/page count... and that we say to stick with it for about 300 pages before quitting... most slower readers don't want to dedicate half their reading time or more to a single book/series...

I just noticed the thread title says #11--do we want to change that to #10 since we actually have it scheduled for next month?

Another convert!!! :D
We’re always here to cheerlead…
And, Nirkatze, I generally use the title to track new releases these days… if anything, I hope to update with 12, or the rerecording of 1 news, soon…

The volume 1 rewrite has been recorded… no nees on release date… they’re gonna have to release it separate from the original, due to Amazon’s 5% rule (can’t change mote than 5% of story and simply replace)… trying to find a way to give current volume 1 owners a free copy, I hear…

Dang, that means I need to reread vs re-listen.

Not really... they edited/re-wrote Volume 1, to improve the quality, make it more interesting to new readers, so we don't have to constantly tell people to ride out the first 300 pages, and add some alternate POVs like Teriarch in, earlier, to spice things up a bit...
Other than that, I heard some rewrites are delaying the recording of audiobook 12, so somewhere in Volume 6 (since I checked discord today)... not sure on all the details, but it sounds like it's mostly related to toning down Wisteria's attitude, if that means anything to you... apparently, it's the one thing fans are super vocal about...
EDIT: This visually shows you the changes to volume 1, with chapter links... 3 new chapters were added, the POV numbering system was changed (which already became a thing in volume 3+, I think), and some chapters were merged...

Like, I love Andrea Parsneau's narration for WI, but she influences the story and changes how the story plays out in my head. My take of the series by reading the website has more nuance, layered and dimensioned than when I listen to the audio. Audiobook is great for getting into the series & re-reads, but reading the actual writing is best way to take in this series. I also like the audio for some intermission/flashback/pov parts that are boring as crap to me but important to story development.
For a long time, part of what held me back on Malazan was the limitation of story input if I listened to audiobook vs reading print. Then I forced myself to read and listen to the first couple of books. Realized that audiobook was fine & I would make extra effort to re-listen to key parts or fav sequences. It was like giving the audiobook 2% more mental attention to keep names/events linked. Audiobook made me like the stories more and dulled the parts that grated.
That process already built in re-reading as I read the story. For me, I will probably never re-read Malazan because the ending was MEH MEH MEH MEH.
🤔 I am a grudgy reader. If I think the author is good & developed a great world, I want a solid start, middle & end. Malazan and Dark Tower series are good. You can see the writing evolving and various capabilities of the author in their work. So, to me, I'm all 🧐🤨😤 with Malazan & Dark Tower. 🤣🤣🤣 I'm all like, the books in both series should be ONLY 4 or 5!!! That's not how I rated them though. It's between 3-5. 😆
Pirateabe is not a polished writer. She's a fun, current day hybrid writer that uses audience participation as part of the process. It makes for a different kind of writing. It has been cool to see her writing experiments and small changes in writing style. Not sure if she will ever reach a point where I think she's a great writer. She's definitely an innovative, daring and creative writer.
Wandering Inn keeps me engaged & curious about how massive plot lines will weave and tie up. The series is huge and had massive wordcount to get ya all into the characters and world. WI is a kitchen sink of genres and plot. I've always been a fan of creative mashups. I like how the series went from a curiosity to an established story family for me.
Yea... I was surprised when I read a reddit thing earlier, that the Volume 1 re-write changes it, so that the 2nd Inn, after the first is destroyed, is built in the same spot (I take it this means the inn is closer to Liscor BEFORE the rebuilt... wouldn't make too much sense to move it further away, given how things play out later on, and the closeness is important)...
With the Wisteria thing, I assume she mellows over time, and the re-write just brings the change closer together?... no idea... I only know what little I do about her through spoilers...

A Vol 1 rewrite would definitely be a nice way to do a reread--trusting Iain to keep us updated on that news... And thank you for the explanation of the thread-title, makes total sense!
re: Rewrite--Wiskeria? Like, Laken's Wiskeria? I'm guessing this is rewrite stuff from later volumes that aren't audio yet? 'cuz she hasn't made much of an impression so far...

I think some others are thinking to do a reread and join you, then it would, even if it’s a super flexible last minute schedule…

Does book 2 really need to be 61 hours long? I mean 43 hours for book 1 is a little ridiculous and book 2 is significantly longer

Volumes 1 & 2 are the only ones where the audiobook covers the entire volume... later volumes (there are 8 finished and 9th is ongoing on web serial) are split into multiple ebooks/audiobooks, and have enough highs and lows to end on satisfying point each time... The goal, past audiobook 3-4, is to not have any audiobooks longer than about 30-40hrs, I think...
Once you get past the slow start (which the rewrite should hopefully fix), it honestly goes faster than you'd think... there are so many fun characters, great antics, and things going on... it's very slice of life at times, but also builds to big epic fantasy moments...
Pretty much everyone that tried the series 2 years ago loved it and stuck with it (or wishes they had more time to get past volume 1, if they're slower readers or got sidetracked with other things)... nobody really said they hated it or abandoned I don't think (maybe 1 person said it wasn't for them, or was too much of a commitment, maybe Jenna?)... (Jenna doesn't count tho... she's the blasphemer not committed enough to Brandon Sanderson to do a Stormlight re-read ;)
EDIT: I just checked the discord, and the extended/edited Volume 1 rewrite is estimated to be 52hrs of audio, so an extra 9 hours...

I know several people that quit Wandering Inn because they don't like the writing style & did not care for Erin. Pirateabe writing style is blunt in showing the extremes. She likes to make it all happy, stupid, selfish, dark, etc. The overall mood is always VERY much one thing with threads of other emotional weight.
Wandering Inn starts off in a chaotic mess. Nothing is super clear. It's obvious that Erin is thrown into an unfamiliar situation. Then we get to see her be mostly ignorant, splashes of dumb and couple moments of good ideas. If the reader isn't ok with Pirateabe's style of highlighting a character's aspect, they aren't going to be interested in the series.
Anyone that gets passed that, will understand that there's more to the characters and world than what has been experienced, but ya gotta get in lots of pages to see that.
Wandering Inn is one of the longest stories ever written… it’s twice as long as Wheel of Time I think, and unfinished… I’ll pull up stats and charts later at home…

On the sweet side, Bird's conversation in the Interlude, with the lady Bird Person, was just adorable!!!!
Our gang of Hobs being screwed the way they were made me angry and once again reminded me that if the bravest and most prominent among people don't choose to stand up for the right things, how can we expect any changes for the good????!!!!!
Lord Tyrian needs to die!!!

People will either be ok reading online for free, ebook for pay or listen to audiobook. Audiobook is what made the series super popular vs sorta popular within niche audience.
I mostly say wait because it'll give re-readers another reason to re-read/join, at least for book 1 :D
But waiting is a nebulous delay, with no news yet on a release date... Audible has it's own whims... sometimes things get stuck in the production conveyor belt for months...

Oooh, I didn't even think of the Trail of Tears comparison, but that is so apt!! Now I kind of want to go back and see what other comparisons there might be, to the goblins and history of Native Americans...
Loved that Bird & Lady Bird scene... and how (view spoiler)
re: Hobs--not sure when this happens--but I love their reaction to the news (view spoiler)
As for Wandering Inn reread--I'm leaning slightly towards Iain's note, that it would give rereaders more of an inclination to join... I'm definitely curious to see how the rewrite works out...
@Charlie--do you think you would do audio or eye-read?
