I read book 2 before I read book 1. I still haven't read anything from her other series, although I have them all on my Nook app. Chirp audio has the first six or seven of the Shandy series on sale right now. I picked up Wrack and Rune already. For some odd reason there is no audio book for Silent Speaker in the Wolfe series.

Kori | 2 comments I just finished The Exploits of Fidelity Dove by Roy Vickers. A fun set of 12 tales from 1924. More female master criminal outwits Scotland Yard Inspector than traditional mystery. Vickers spins a good tale. I think I'd like to try his Department of Dead Ends: 14 Detective Stories tales next. Has anyone here read them?

Welcome, Kori! I remember enjoying a short story by Roy Vickers in one of the British Library anthologies edited by Martin Edwards and thinking I would like to try more by him, but I haven't been able to find anything that's available in the UK.

Sadly the ebook of The Exploits of Fidelity Dove doesn't seem to be available as an ebook on Amazon UK. It sounds really good from your description though.

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments I am now reading Ha'penny by Jo Walton. It is an alternative history, where the war was ended differently, but very anti Jew. I read the first in the series some while ago, and wanted to find out more about the people involved. The detective is an Inspector Carmichael of Scotland Yard, who is hampered by the political situation. So far , so good.

At $3.99 I will give it a try, although I am not crazy about short stories.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 5088 comments I started Venus in Copper and Best Detective Stories of Cyril Hare for our January reads. Short story collections are fun to work in between other books, but seem to get too “same-y” if you read too many in one sitting.

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments I am reading the Cyril Hare one and finding it samey. I would start something else but I just want to get it over and done with now

I intend to start Cyril Hare stories tonight. As Susan says, short stories are better spread out.

I’ve been trying to read a couple a day - I jumped around a bit, read the two Christmas ones out of order, they were excellent. I think one of them was in a Christmas anthology I’ve read, it seemed familiar.

Well then, chuck it and move on! Life is short, you’ve tried it, it’s not to your liking, and it sounds like you’ve formed enough of an opinion to write a brief review, even if you mark it a DNF.

Finished it. Once I got onto the longer stories, I found it held my attention.

Am now about to start The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith

Good for you, I look forward to the discussion!

message 869: by Frances (new)

Frances (francesab) | 652 comments More of a thriller, but I'm half way through the Louise Penny/Hillary Clinton State of Terror and it seems a great combination of Clinton's insider's understanding of the White House/Secretary of State world, and Penny's deft hand with a mystery/thriller. Some digs at a President Trump-like predecessor is reminiscent of Mick Herron's Peter Judd (and there's even a Peter Judd-like character in this one). So far I'd definitely recommend.

I picked it up on a whim and was very glad I did. Like you say, an excellent mix of the two women's specialties.
