What are you reading in 2022?
I hope you enjoy Dead Silence Gord! I really enjoyed it and particularly loved the creepy atmosphere.
Peabody being a pink cowboy sounds fantastic Gord.
I'll be the One is a book I am interested in too so glad to hear you liked it.
Looks like overall a rather excellent reading week

So glad to hear you enjoyed Diamond Eye!! I cannot wait to read that one still. Also awesome that you want to go read her memoir after

so binged my way through the three books that are out so far and have enjoyed talking with Kay about them as we go. Wouldn't have binged 2 and 3 right away except they were on audible plus. Not the best books but so fun and worth the read. I think I liked this one best. The change in MCs was a great thing

I hope you enjoy it too!

I decided to read another book I had on my want list. It's called Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
I absolutely love this book so far.
While I don't have a lot of books to talk about this week I have a bit to say about what I did read. That being said lets get into things.
-5 Stars (Maybe a 4, a 4.5, a 5? It changes a bit)This was part of a new release challenge I am participating in and you could say I was a tiny bit hype heading into this book. I was sold on this book as soon as I read the synopsis for it for a couple of reasons. The short and easy answer was that it was a horror book set in space aboard an abandoned luxury liner. How can you say no to that? The second reason is a bit longer and requires some information about me. Several years ago I had issues getting to sleep at night. Basically my mind would not stop thinking and I could lay awake all night reviewing stuff that had happened, stuff that would happen, and stuff that might happen. To combat this I basically made myself a dream world and started telling stories. It allowed my mind to focus on something and I could get to sleep. At first this took a lot of active effort on my behalf. After several years of this it's become second nature for me. Over the years I've been the leader of various groups in various settings. Elite soldiers taking on only the most dangerous of missions, pirates, fantasy adventure teams, etc. My current setting is a salvage crew in space with an adventurers guild kind of framework. That being said it should be pretty apparent why this book would have some appeal to me right now. While waiting for my library to get me a copy of this book I saw several other people here on Goodreads give this book positive reviews. With each one I was getting just a bit more hype.
Now for the book itself. I absolutely loved this book, mostly. I loved the setting, I loved the creepy vibes I was getting, I loved the unsure nature of the narrative. I was all in on the experience until maybe the last 100 pages or so. I want to be perfectly clear here, the book did not fail the ending. The ending we got was satisfactory and it worked but it didn't do everything I wanted it to. I wanted this great big scary action filled ending that it was teasing and I kind of got that but it was off page, somewhere else. The book was also giving us all these clues throughout that I was using to build all these theories about what was happening and why. Some of theories were correct and some never went anywhere as some of the hyped up plot points never really went anywhere. There were certain plot points that I was expecting much more of a payoff considering how emphasized they where in the story. Yes, I'm being vague on purpose. This is a new release and I don't want to spoil anything for those that haven't read it. Overall this was a great read, the ending could have been better, but it doesn't detract from the rest of the book. I'd say if you were curious about this book then give it a read.
-3 StarsThe other new release I was working on this week. This is essentially a mystery/haunted house kind of story and it was alright. It takes place in a small town with a haunted house out in the woods that every generation seems to know about. Bad things have happened in this house and something bad happens to our MC and her friend when they are young teens in that place. Now as adults whatever happened back then is happening again and our MC has to figure it out. First and foremost this book is a slow burn and I think that is where my issues kind of started. I've got nothing against slow burns in general but I'm a bit more of a fan of something a bit faster paced. This book took it's time setting things up with chapters from different times, different characters, etc and that was fine. There was a big reveal though that was telegraphed early on, at least in my opinion, and waiting for the book to finally get there felt like it took a long while. When it finally got there the big reveal didn't have that shocking impact that I think the book was expecting it to have. I really don't have a lot of bad things to say about this book though. It was an interesting read that just never blew my socks off.
-5 StarsMy latest audiobook that I have completed. This is definitely an older audio recording that was likely ripped from the CD and converted to digital. The recordings were at different volume levels, there were sections that sounded like there was a completely different narrator, there were other sections that sounded like it was recorded in a tin can. It's seems like a common issue with some of these older audiobooks.
That being said it doesn't take away from the book and I love this series. It's hard to talk about this book without spoiling what happens in earlier books. The story is told from two different POV's. In one story line Will and Evanlyn have been captured and forced into slavery and in the other story line the Halt and Horace are making their way to Will to rescue him. There are a lot of challenges for everyone to overcome especially with Will and Evanlyn being held in slavery. If you're into young adult fantasy then I really can't recommend this series enough.
-3 StarsA random comic I grabbed to read at lunch this week. There were witches, vampires, gods, etc and it was alright. It didn't exactly rock my world and I don't have a lot to say about it.
The next audiobook I'm listening to is
The next book I'm reading is another new release and that is
On the comics/manga front I'm starting
this evening.
@Gord I love your review on Dead Silence, the book is way out of my usual picks and because of your review I've just added it to my TBR and when I manage to buy/get it, I'll definitely give it a try :)
My small update for the week, I found several gems and very pleased with this weeks books.
- amazing sequel to the first book, I can get the next book in 2 days and already can't wait to start it.
- I'm still loving the series and after a short break am going to pick the next book. So far so good!
- a while ago I've read the first book in the series and it was ok and the second one is unfortunately not good enough :(
- I don't have the books 1-3 from the series and decided to start from the 4th one. It was a great story! Somehow I ended up with falling into the hole of cosy mysteries and enjoying it so much!
- one more cosy mystery series by the author I like (recently I've read 10 books of her other cosy mystery series and it was oh so good!).
- I've enjoyed several books by the author but this one didn't get me at all. Just ok I think.
Gord glad to hear about dead silence. Im still waiting on a copy for that one!
Elena too bad about the Paige Toon book. It happens sometimes. I havent read that one myself

it was adorable. If you are looking for a contemporary romance style book with musical theatre and superhero stuff this is that.

That's awesome Kayeigh! I can't wait to start reading the final book later today. I've been dying to know what happens next!
Finished
I still dont know how to rate it. It was not what I expected somehow? Im not really sure what I expected. I believe it was recommended to me at some point and I put a hold on it and jumped into it without really knowing what it was. On one hand it was slower than I would have liked to get the story rolling. On the other it is an extremely well done look into Native American life. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting something different and quite a realistic mystery. Just need the right mood/mindset for it I guess?

Time for that weekly update and it was more new release novels as well as some manga.
-4 StarsI headed into this book with no other thought than the synopsis sounded interesting. What I got was a pretty solid book and a real good mystery that had a twist that I saw coming, a twist I suspected, and a twist that blindsided me. The book opens with a violent set of murders taking place on New Years Eve 1999. Flash forward fifteen years and there is another set of murders that has some similarities. Not enough to be undeniably called the same but enough to raise some suspicions. The story is told from numerous POV's and the case spans three days. I was initially concerned about the multiple POV's as things can get a bit messy but this clipped along at a fast pace and felt smooth. I think the biggest factor in this was the short chapter lengths. I enlarge the text on my ereader so this book was a little over 700 pages when I read it. The longest chapters were probably clocking in around 13-14 pages or so and there were a few chapters that were only 3-4 pages. It really helped move the story along at a quick pace. Overall it was a good solid story that had some great scenes.
-3 StarsI don't want to call this book a failure but this really didn't do anything for me. This is rather unfortunate as the premise for this book is really interesting. We have a couple of guys travel to Siberia in December to essential scout things out for a potential TV show they want to film. After arriving in a small village in the middle of no where spooky things start to happen. The stage is now set for the story. I loved this set up as there is a lot of potential. Having the book set in the middle of winter in Siberia makes a unique problem for our characters. The environment is an active threat that has nothing to do with the supernatural elements. You're not going to have some young woman running away from the boogeyman outside in her bikini in this horror novel. The other problem that the setting presents is that the MC's don't speak the local language. This should have been more of a challenge for the MC's that initially was a problem that just kind of faded away as the novel went along. The novel kind of started slow, got interesting when the spooky stuff started cooking off, and then just kind of turned meh. I just wasn't invested in anything overall. I didn't care about the main characters, I didn't care when side characters died off, I didn't really really feel threatened by the big scary. It was just things happening on the page and I had no stake in the game. It was an interesting idea that just didn't really do anything interesting with it.
-4 StarsMore post-apocalyptic adventures with our MC's punching people in creative ways that result in the bad guys erupting into 20 gallons of blood, chunky bit of flesh, and bone shards.
-5 StarsMan I love this series. This story is the start of the character growth for our MC. From big angry man swings sword to something even more. It's also been a year since the tragic passing of the author which just made this reread a bit bittersweet as a fan.
-4 StarsI'm now firmly into all new material with these two volumes. In these we get more of the ever expanding story. We have new characters coming into play, new back stories being revealed, and new lore. We also have a potentially nasty cliffhanger at the end of volume 7 that has me a touch concerned.
-4 StarsEven more food related adventures. We have completed the first area of the new world and moving on to even greater threats in the next area with martial art practicing monkeys.
I'm still working on
on audiobookFor novels I'm potentially looking at reading
this week. There of course will be manga and comics sprinkled in as well. Not sure what but there I've got more Toriko, more Delicious in Dungeon, and Hoopla has their Bonus Borrows program going this month.
Nice Gord. Seems like a decent week! I struggle with chapters that are that short too often with multiple POV books generally but glad that one worked for you!
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed The Night Shift, Gord! I've had my eye on that one for a little while!
Here's an update on what I've read:
I finally read this one last month and I loved it, of course. Lol. I think my favorite part about the series is definitely the characters, especially Gemma and Leo.
It's been a while since I read a MG book, but this one was a ton of fun! It was really funny and a little spooky. I need more MG from Kiersten White!
This is the only book I read while I was on vacation cause I was too busy doing nothing on the beach 😂 But I really enjoyed this book! It's a contemporary romance with a time loop twist, so that was fun!
And today I finished another contemporary! Who even am I?? 😂 I enjoyed this one too! This one also had a little bit of a supernatural twist that I really enjoyed. It was a little bit more family-centric, which I was a fan of.

I really enjoyed it. It was really good. Very unique and intriguing. A bit slow in places, but I will definitely read the second book. It's very African or Nigerian mythology based (I'm sorry I don't know much about either to be able to distinguish) which I really enjoyed.

And here is my small update:
- the series by a Russian author, which I love so much! The world is amazing and the story so good. The ending of the second book was so unexpected and I don't know what to do now, either to buy the next book (which I didn't plan before finishing all the current reads) or stick to the plan and keep reading other books.
- finished demonized line too and can't choose which line I love more, both are good.
- oh my, dear author, stop doing that to me! Once again I can't get the 3rd book and want it so much! The druid story is also splendid!
- I had some issues with some of her other books but this one I've enjoyed, very interesting romantic story, also Australia...
- I'm still reading cozy mysteries and can't stop :D
