2. Hannah Arendt's Rahel Varnhagen: The Life of a Jewish WomanLink to my review:

I read this book. Initially I was a bit taken aback with all the sexual violence. Your review Alwynne cleared up a lot of things for me, especially the historical perspective. As I sat ruminating over it, I realised how true to life it actually is, how close it seemed to me - someone from another country another time.
Thank you, I'm so glad it made some sense. I know exactly what you mean about some of the scenes, the fact that they involved a child made them that much harder to deal with. But they also seemed to fit very well with what I've read about Weimar society, and they reminded me too the regimes in the later The Child Manuela and the earlier The Confusions of Young Törless.
5. Emmy Hennings's flawed but completely fascinating novel from 1920 Branded: A DiaryLink to my review:

6. Jewish-Austrian writer Veza Canetti's neglected, semi-autobiographical novel The Tortoises unpublished until years after her death, it was written in 1939 not long after her flight from Vienna to Paris and later England.Link to my review:
