Elliott Scott | 2 comments Hello!

I'm looking to meet other Sci-Fi Mystery authors. Are you in the genre? If so, feel free to post your book and talk about it. What drew you to it, and what kind of challenges have you faced?

If you're a reader, what's your favorite Sci-Fi Mystery? Especially any Indy published ones?

Thanks!

Dale Lehman (dalelehman) | 207 comments Hi Elliott! I've written science fiction for a loooong time. In fact, up through the early 2000's, about 90% of what I wrote was SF. Most of it was also barely readable, although by the end I was starting to get some encouraging comments from editors to whom I submitted. Then some other stuff happened, and I started writing mysteries. I've published three mystery novels in a series and one humorous caper novel, plus one humorous SF novel. I have a more serious SF novel in the works (a post-apocalyptic tale about, of all things, a pandemic, but the original story preceded COVID by about 15 or 20 years).

I tend to work at least a bit of mystery into even non-mystery stories. In Space Operatic (my aforementioned humorous SF novel), you'll find the most fabulous theater in the entire solar system, but it's never been used. The local culture minister refuses to let anyone play in it. The question nobody but she can answer is: why?

Being a semi-old guy, I always enjoyed Asimov's SF mysteries. That said, Ray Bradbury's entries in the field blow everyone else's away, although they may not quite be what one thinks of as SF mysteries. "The Veldt" and "Usher II" come to mind.

I haven't done enough reading of indie published SF mystery to be able to name anyone. My to-read list is already about ten miles long, and I'm working through it at a snail's pace.

Ann Birdgenaw (annbirdgenaw) | 36 comments I am an author/librarian in an elementary school and always wanted to write a book of my own. I was inspired to write this story by a strange beeping coming from a box in my garage. When I realised the box belonged to a deceased great-uncle it got eerie. Then COVID-19 hit Canada and everyone was in quarantine or lock down, I had lots of time to imagine being sucked through a wormhole to other planets and what wonderful things I might find there. That's how Black Hole Radio was born.
