Keri I keep making reading challenges of books I SHOULD read, instead of books I WANT to read, and then I don't ever read them. Last year I added quite a few nonfiction books, but I only rarely have the desire to read nonfiction. So, this year, I'm making a change: these are (some of) the fiction books that are on my shelf that I actually want to read and that I am looking forward to reading.

1) We Begin at the End by Chris Whitaker
2) Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurty
3) Lillian Boxfish Takes A Walk by Kathleen Rooney
4) The Secret History by Donna Tartt
5) Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
6) Miracle Creek by Angie Kim
7) The Searcher by Tana French
8) Beartown by Frederik Backman
9) The Obelisk Gate by NK Jemisin
10) The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
11) Against the Loveless World by Susan Abulhawa
12) A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

Alternates:
1) Whiskey and Charlie by Annabel Smith
2) Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger
3) The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michelle Richardson
4) The Fifteen Wonders of Daniel Green by Erica Boyce

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 800 comments I think that sounds like a good plan - I always feel there are classics I should read, but can never bring myself to read them, I'm much better at books I want to read

Lea (leaspot) | 3636 comments Keri, your list looks great. I've read Rebecca, Beartown, The Obelisk Gate, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and loved them all! I have The Secret History on my individual list also. Good luck with your new strategy, part of the fun is figuring out what works for you. And reading good books, whether they are on the list or not. Best of luck!

Ioana | 2126 comments The books that you actually want to read are the best. From your list, I've read: Rebecca, Beartown, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Ordinary Grace and loved them all. If the rest are even half way that good, you're in a for great year of reading. Good luck!

Rebecca is excellent.

After my first year of the challenge in 2012; I vowed to never read what I should read, but what I wanted to read.

Good luck and happy reading
