My review for Garry Disher's latest terrific rural crime novel. Hope he's planning a sequel for Charlie Deravin.

Totally agree with your excellent review Greg. Disher's books are always good reads and Charlie would make a great MC for a series.

I knew Noel had to be up to something back then otherwise he wouldn't have been mentioned at all, but our eyes were very carefully drawn away from him. I'm not sure about Liam - if he was so sure his father had killed his mother, why didn't he mention seeing him sooner, might have saved them all some grief.
I didn't really like any of the characters, even Charlie gave me the irrits, but I wouldn't say 'no' to seeing what he gets up to next.

The pace is a slow roll. So yes the ending did seem a bit rushed and unfinished,( it was a bit like oh dear I'm at page x and I need to wrap things up). I can't see Charlie as a counselor , he seems more empathetic to himself rather than demonstrating it to others.
But it was a 5 star read until the end. 4 ☀
