Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments I wanted to provide more specifics on how players can earn participation points while doing this challenge.

First, there will be a grand prize that is yet to be determined and that will NOT be participation points. This prize will go to the person who does the best job at predicting the final four, the final two, and the champion.

But a couple of astute members pointed out that once their champion choice is eliminated, the challenge might not be as fun, and I completely agree, so we will provide some additional options to earn participation points along the way to the final four.

FOR PREDICTIONS

Predict the correct champion - 30 participation points
Predict an author in the final two - 15 participation points (so 30 if you get them both)
Predict an author in the final four - 5 participation points per author plus a bonus 5 if you get all four authors (max 25 participation points).

FOR READING

Read any book by the champion. If you read and review ANY book by the champion AT ANY POINT in 2022 - earn 20 points.

Read and review books during a given round prior to the final 4 (i.e. 64, 32, 16, 8) by an author still in the running and earn points as follows:

2 pts for reading one author in a bracket of your choice
4 pts for reading a second author in a different bracket
6 pts for reading a third author in a third bracket
8 pts for reading a fourth author in the final bracket

Once you have read an author, you may no longer read that author for challenge participation points going forward. In other words, one book per author for participation points, regardless of the round.

There will be a reporting thread for participation that is separate from that for voting, and participation points and reviews will need to be reported prior to the results being announced for the next round. Points are additive so if you read two books from two different brackets, you will earn 6 pts.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Votes may still be earned by reading any books by any still-in-the-running author regardless of brackets or whether you've read them in a prior round. The rules above apply to participation points only.

Fire away with all your questions!!

KateNZ | 4099 comments Fab, Anita - this is so helpful. A couple of questions (it’s me, aye?!) …

Are there still extra participation points if a book meets the monthly tag or has this new structure replaced that idea? Presumably participation points for ‘monthly tag’ and ‘other books’ apply as normal anyhow, yes?

Cool that you can only read an author once for participation points during a voting round. Makes sense. But can you get participation points for reading a second book by that author during the next round? Or would you only be reading for voting points at that stage?

Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments Excellent questions as usual, Kate. Please let me know if I provide enough clarity below.

Are there still extra participation points if a book meets the monthly tag or has this new structure replaced that idea?

Any book you read (regardless of whether it is for a challenge) should still be added to the monthly threads, and you WILL also receive the regular participation points for them.

But can you get participation points for reading a second book by that author during the next round? Or would you only be reading for voting points at that stage?

Once you've read an author for participation points for this challenge, you may not read that author again for additional participation points within the challenge. I will clarify that in the instructions above.

You may read that author again strictly for voting points (and for our regular monthly threads).

Shelly | 937 comments So... participation points are totally separate from voting points?

Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments Yes, that is correct, Shelly!

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11063 comments I love it!

So did I get this right? If we read one author from each bracket in round 1(64) by mid-March, we can repeat the process (with 4 different authors) in round 2 (32)? And again in Round 3 (16), and round 4 (8)? That's about 2 authors per month (round 4 might be shorter). That's totally doable.

If we managed to read the winner in one of the earlier rounds, would we still get 20 points for reading that author? Or 20 minus what we already earned, or a different book. (I don't want to be greedy.)

That is EXACTLY right.

And if you read the winner, whether on purpose or by mistake, you get 20 additional points. Everyone who reads the winner at any time in 2022 will get those 20 so long as you write a review and can point me to it.

Jen K | 3143 comments I understand that each author can only be read once in the tournament/ year to count but just to clarify, is there also a limit of the number of authors read in each round to get participation points?

For example, could I read 2 authors from Bracket A in the first round? Or do I have to strategize and only pick 1 author per bracket to read in each round?

Based on an earlier question, you can get participation points for an author once, but if you read that author again you can earn voting points. I think that you can only earn participation points for 1 author in each bracket per round. But following the logic above, if you read a second author in that bracket/round, I think you would earn an extra voting point.

In a couple spots I have two favorites (with new books I want to read) pitted against one another, so I might read them both in round one, and earn participation points for one, and a vote for the other.

Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments Is there also a limit of the number of authors read in each round to get participation points?

To get participation points, you are limited to four authors in each round, and you must select one author from each bracket to comprise the four.

For example, could I read 2 authors from Bracket A in the first round?

Not for participation points.

If you read two authors from Bracket A, you would get 2 participation points and 2 voting points (1 per author presuming neither book fit the tag for the month).

If you read one author from Bracket A and one author from Bracket B, you would get 6 participation points (2 pts for the first author plus 4 pts for the second). You would also get 2 voting points.

Or do I have to strategize and only pick 1 author per bracket to read in each round?

To maximize participation points, you need to strategize.

Thank you!!! I really needed the practical example. Thanks for organizing all of this and glad that we can help you with tracking!

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8412 comments Will these special participation points be awarded as we go? Or will they be tallied at the end and awarded all at once at the end of the year-long challenge?

message 15: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments The participation points will be awarded after each round of voting is completed.

Your set up looks perfect. The phone app is not letting me connect to your review, but it is probably because the phone app sucks lol. I will test it on my laptop, but I am sure you are all good!!

Thanks! It was a lot of information to take in and I wanted to make sure I didn't mess it up. LOL!

Karin | 9210 comments Okay, I didn't follow this because I am not guessing or trying to win, etc, so didn't realize I can vote. I don't want to read a zillion books for any challenge. Also, I didn't realize that voting starts in March, but I took a gander at this today out of curiosity to see how things were going and saw that I can vote.

Is this correct? I can read between one and 4 books in two weeks? I see the scoring--but each book means one vote? I have a few authors I'd love to see move on to the next round (yes, I vote in every IRL election, even if it's just local politics--it's was drilled into me by my parents.)

Hi Karin!

Yes, you may vote. You will get to cast 1 vote for each pair no matter what your status in the game. You don't even have to be paying any attention to it whatsoever.

If you wish to earn additional votes, you can. You can read any book or books by the 64 authors still in the running. Just make sure you track them in the vote tracking thread. Each book you read will give you additional votes (beyond the 1 for each pair) to cast toward any author or authors you wish. Make sense?

So sorry I somehow missed this question, Nancy. I know you now know the answer. A single book can do double duty - - earn you votes and participation points. So long as it meets the criteria specified for each category.

Thanks. I just ignored this and haven't paid any heed to this since I wasn't voting. But since I do have authors I'd love to see win, I do have one vote so far and will go to the tracking thread posthaste!
