OMG! You're braver than me."

Ha ha. I had previously been living in the North-West of WA. Up there we mostly saw King Brown snakes or Gwardas. They can be deadly but are pretty shy. If you stomp on the ground they slither off quickly. (Usually)
Tiger Snakes are a whole different kettle of fish, though, as I learned that day!

Great choice! I’ve heard her speak a few times (festivals and podcasts) and she’s always good value. Not one to self-censor and seems to have a good grasp of issues that are important to young readers.

Andrea | 2164 comments I’m attending an online event tonight for UTAS Alumni, to hear the 3 authors shortlisted for The Dick and Joan Green Family Award for Tasmanian History 2022. I’m mainly going for Jock Serong (The Burning Island), but I’m also interested in Cassandra Pybus (Truganini), although I haven’t read that one yet. I’m not familiar with the 3rd one.

Thanks Colin. Actually I thought I would be there in real life next week, but decided to wait till after the covid peak (my mum is extremely vulnerable). Hopefully soon 🤞

message 307: by Sharon (new)

Sharon | 5468 comments I haven’t picked up a book for over a week now and it’s starting to worry me. 😟 It seems I have just lost my mojo and I don’t know what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve also taken a heap of library books back to the library as I didn’t read them and I’ve NEVER done that before 🙁

A few strategies that have worked for me are:
1) Re-read a favourite (maybe from childhood)
2) Pick up something light and fluffy - a guilty pleasure - that won’t demand too much of your brainpower
3) Read the book version of something you’ve really enjoyed on screen.

Good luck!

That's rotten Sharon - I've never had it happen, but if it did I'd be tempted to pick up a favourite author, one you know you'd enjoy. Or re-read a favourite as Andrea suggested. Good luck - I hope you can relax into your reading soon :)

message 311: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9837 comments I agree with Brenda and Andrea - I have a particular series of favourite books I go to when I'm a bit jaded from reading. They're thirty years old now but always make me laugh. Trying something new - a genre you don't often read can work or listening to a good audiobook - something entertaining that a lot of people have recommended.

Same as Carolyn - I grab an old Terry Pratchett or Georgette Heyer from my shelf and I am back into reading again in minutes.

It’s a terrible thing isn’t it Sharon! I can sympathize as it’s happened to me a few times and it really does worry you. The good news is that it will come back! I agree with what the girls here have said and also I would say don’t try to force it, that just makes you feel worse. I stopped doing the challenges for a bit and just started reading for my own pleasure, ie: any random choice rather than something I’d committed to or demanding my attention. I found I was putting pressure on myself to try to reduce my ever growing book collection rather than just reading for the pleasure of the story. Not that I didn’t enjoy the books I chose, because I only choose books I know I will love. But I was putting too much pressure on myself to finish rather than let the book consume me…if that makes sense? Audio books are good, especially when doing something quiet, like cooking, jigsaw puzzles, travelling, exercise etc. We were locked in for so long that you are probably feeling the call of the wild! 😂 Go outside and just do whatever you do feel like doing and then you might want to read about it later 🤗
*Don’t get me wrong, I love the challenges and miss them often, but I’m more relaxed again with my reading atm.

Thomas Greenbank (20940426thomas_greenbank) | 58 comments Something that's been on my mind lately:
What is the point of a virus? Everything on this earth, even the things that aggravate us the most, (snakes, spiders, even mosquitoes) have a place in the ecology of our planet. What is the point of a virus, except to inflict itself on other living organisms and cause discomfort, illness, or death? Yes, I do have Covid at the moment. I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to be fully vaxed.

Thanks, Brenda.
No, I'm not too bad. Like I said, I'm so glad I've been fully vaxed. A common cold can often have me bedridden, as my lungs are very sensitive. I hate to think how bad I'd be now if I got a serious dose of C19.

Sharon | 5468 comments Thank you so much everyone. Some great suggestions which I very much appreciate❤️ I will go through my books over the weekend and see if there’s something there that will hopefully get my mojo back.🤞

Julie - I know exactly what you mean when you mentioned pressure on yourself because I have also fallen behind in challenges and I’m so behind in reviews and it worries me. 🤯😨

message 320: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 79985 comments Mod
Don't let it worry you Sharon, that will only make it worse for you. You're a volunteer reviewer so if you want to say just a few words, that's fine. Something like "loved this story " or enjoyed this thriller"...you get the idea 💕

message 321: by Trish (new)

Trish (trishr) | 1109 comments Good luck with getting your reading mojo back Sharon, and definitely don't put any pressure on yourself as reading should be a pleasure not a stress inducer. I am often in awe of so many of you as you write such great reviews, however I know that's not for me as I would find it too stressful.

Thomas, hope you are on the mend quite soon, being fully vaccinated hopefully should help with milder symptoms.

message 322: by Sharon (new)

Sharon | 5468 comments Thank you Brenda and Trish. I think I will do that with some of my reviews, Brenda and that will help me catch up on them. (Thanks😊)

Trish - yes you are so right that reading is for pleasure, so a little less stress and more pleasure 😊📚

message 323: by Diana (new)

Diana (secondhandrose) | 73 comments 🤗 Sharon, Andrea has given you some good suggestions. I always go for something light to get my reading mojo back.

Not exactly book related but exciting. My sister and I have booked for a Paris Textile Tour with a side trip to France’s largest quilting, embroidery and textiles exposition in Nantes. April next year.

I swear by it, Suzanne, although I log in through the Open Library to easily track my loans and search just for e-books.
https://openlibrary.org/

Borrowings are through the Internet Archive. Sometimes you can borrow e-books for 14 days, and sometimes you can only read online for an hour at a time. Great resource.
