When we were renovating our kitchen in our previous house, my DH carried the old cupboards etc. out to the skip we'd hired. As he came out with the next set, he noticed the first set had disappeared already. This continued until the whole kitchen disappeared - sink and all! We never saw anyone take anything and figured it must have been a neighbour to have been able to disappear so fast. (We could have saved money on the skip if we'd known!)

Haha the old saying about trash and treasure is so true!

I saw this today, thought I'd show you of the lovely experiences of the volunteers at Brotherhood Books: https://www.brotherhoodbooks.org.au/v...
Suz wrote: "That's a funny story, Carolyn, I hope you can still use it. Perhaps time for a little culling?!"This happened 20y ago in old old house - a tiny cottage with a decrepit kitchen, which made us wonder who would want it. We’re renovating the kitchen in our current house at the moment and Marianne’s tale reminded me of this.

I shouldn't have looked - I have now added more books onto my "want to read" list, lol
I wonder if, now that Allen & Unwin are back on NetGalley, they're no longer doing giveaways of print books here?
Marianne wrote: "I wonder if, now that Allen & Unwin are back on NetGalley, they're no longer doing giveaways of print books here?"Yep - they're there.

Why don't you PM them through GR to ask that question Marianne - I'm sure a few of us are curious :)

Done!
Marianne wrote: "I wonder if, now that Allen & Unwin are back on NetGalley, they're no longer doing giveaways of print books here?"I hope that is not the case for us dinosaurs that only read print books.
Brenda wrote: "I'd give them time - they probably don't check GR very often :)"Aaand I see there's another giveaway, so that answers that question.
Speaking of publishers, I read this [referring to HarperCollins] on an author's blog the other day:"My publisher is always telling its authors to ignore Goodreads"
Found it interesting Haha
Absolutely, Brenda! Thankfully, it seems this author ignored that advice and has a profile on here, writes reviews too :)

That's is just odd - I would have thought most authors would be very interested in reading reviews on Goodreads, and considering that a lot of us here will often read something that we have seen rated highly on here, and maybe wouldn't have either heard of, or considered reading unless seeing it on here, then that just doesn't make sense.

I'd be interested to know what the publisher thinks the author should be paying attention to.
Surely not Amazon? Or maybe critical reviews in literary magazines that few readers read? Perhaps it depends if you're after book sales or literary awards.
That's so true, Sharon! I've encountered most authors being excited by their first Goodreads reviews and actively encouraging readers to leave reviews. I've discovered so many books and authors here I wouldn't have otherwise known about. And yes, Carolyn! I understand a publisher telling an author not to get caught up focusing on negative reviews. But to ignore a place like Goodreads entirely? I don't know. It feels like telling a chef to ignore the restaurant. Ridiculous.

I'd be far too sensitive to read something negative.
I've encountered only a few nasty comments so far on my reviews, but generally I can engage the writer in a bit of a conversation so we can discuss our differences. I don't think anyone has stayed enemies.
But gee, after putting years into a book, how could you bear to see someone one really pan it?

Sad to say, many authors don't like Goodreads. The general consensus in most author forums, is that Goodreads reviewers savage authors and are overly harsh. My thought, however, is that many authors pop onto Goodreads screaming 'Buy my book!' and 'Review my book!' but forget that Goodreads is a place for readers. (Which is why it's called Goodreads.)
The key about reviews, I think, is to remember, that there are books I don't like, so therefore people may not like my books. And some of them will be kind about it, but others won't. And then you have to grow a thick skin.
Brenda wrote: "Yes, and Leonie - if there's a review with a 1 or 2 star book - DON'T READ IT!!!"Helps keep the ego intact!

Here's an article from The Atlantic about the issues some authors face.

Thanks Leonie for sharing that. The part I find really sad is that they put an umbrella over every member of Goodreads, saying we're all bad with our bombing. What about genuine readers and reviewers who appreciate the books we read, the ARCs we are given? Nothing we can do about the general opinions that are out there :(

I've had one bad experience myself (which I have to say mostly made me laugh) - when someone read a shorty story I wrote, or the anthology I was part of - don't actually know which, and then 1 starred everything I've ever written on Goodreads. All on the same day. 🤷♀️
But that is the only time I've ever had an issue.
There are great groups to be a part of here, and I think the key is to remember it's GoodREADS!
Yes, well said. Unfortunately there are always people out there who have nothing better to do with their time than to try to make others miserable..

Just letting everyone know, especially those who read historical fiction that I just received this email from https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/1...

PS - There is no rush to read the novel. I saw that there are a lot of them :)
Sorry for the invasive way I'm advertising but I'm sad because no copies have been sold yet and I don't know how to start sales :)
I have blocked him and would suggest others block him also :)

Just came here to see if anyone else got that message. USD $45.62 for a 200-page book from an author with a bunch of books in Romanian, with an offer to reimburse via Paypal? Sounds like a good way to lose AUD $68.61 (plus postage)!I see he's targetting anyone who reviewed The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris, he also comments on their reviews.
This is a new one on me. An author who offers to mail you their book for a review is genuine. This has to be a scam.

After I politely declined, he sent me the first chapter of his book in text in the message!!
