As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning by Laurie Lee
4 stars
The second in Laurie Lee's autobiographical trilogy. In 1934 as a young man he left England and walked through Spain playing his fiddle for money. Beautifully written account of his travels and the incredibly diverse range of people he met, finishing in the far south of Spain and with the start of the Spanish Civil War. In an Epilogue he describes how he went back to help fight the fascists.

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments Like Jen, I'm finding my Black Mischief book a bit dated and dull but I'm nearly halfway, it's shortish and it's a classical painting cover so I'll finish it. My other book set in Czech Republic is funny and makes up for it. They're the last I have listed so I'm on track.

message 408: by L (new)

L (alinaisreading) I'm sorry I've been MIA for the past week or two, I've had some things come up and have been all over the place. I've removed some books from the spreadsheet, as I'm not sure as to how much I'm going to be able to read for the rest of the month. I still plan to get through The Beautiful and Savage Lands, but I doubt I'll be able to read anything else.

I hope everyone is having a lovely week (:

message 409: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 736 comments Thank you, Alina,

If everyone else can remove books, they likely won't get to this month, that would be great. I have 4 more planned, and we need another 20 for this month. I added a sheet for April if you just want to move them over to next month.

Thanks

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Anything we need to replace for Alina like a reverse or color cover?
Or are we still looking pretty good?

message 412: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 736 comments We need 14 more cards total and 1 more color cover is not yet claimed on the planning SS.

We don't need any more Skips, 2's, 8s, 7s, or 4s.

message 413: by Elisabeth (last edited Mar 26, 2022 04:36PM) (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments I can read Book 3 of the Slonsky series for the Mini colour cover.
Death On Duty Authentic detective fiction, packed full of suspense (Josef Slonský Investigations) by Graham Brack It's classed as grey. I'll add it to the sheets.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I can't tell which cover color is still open. I could swap out Purrs and Peril for another cozy with a cover color. It looks like we had all blues and greens so I'll see if I can find one that works for multiple letters. Going to try and finish Beach Read today and I can do Garden of Lies for a Q book by Tuesday. Or maybe I can swap that Q book out for one with a blue or green cover.

My boss, aka Mom comes back from Florida next weekend. That might cut down on my audio book listening at the office. She's 76. I really wish she'd turn more work over to me and just work part time.

message 415: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 736 comments There are only 2 color covers not read for yet: One is the Blue 6 and I am working on it now.

The second is a Green 5 and I will check with a Contradiction on how that is going.

Please read your Q books still. We really need it. After the Q book, you can read whatever you like. I am about to post the April color cards. There are some fun changes.

Skip Blue
2 Blue
6 Blue
7 Blue - Jax
9 Blue
Skip Yellow - Lexi

5 Green

We also need 8 Reverses next month

Lexi | 736 comments We also have 6 Overload cards and no Wild Draw 4s.

◈ What are Overload cards?

Overload cards are also cover colour cards, BUT they require different colours.
The colours you can use for Overload cards are the following:

- purple
- pink - Jax
- orange - Ella
- brown - Ella
- grey -
- white - Elisabeth
- black - Jax

You can only use each cover colour once.

You can claim these cards as we do the main color cards. This is going to take a lot of planning to cover, but I have faith in us.

message 418: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 102 comments Looking at my shelf I'm reading Making the Modern World Materials and Dematerialization by Vaclav Smil which should work for a blue 6 or 7.

Tiny Beautiful Things Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar by Cheryl Strayed which should be ok for a red 2.

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston which I think we said was purple last month should work?

And I have these three but I don't think they are enough but thought I'd toss them out there Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir The 99% Invisible City A Field Guide to the Hidden World of Everyday Design by Roman Mars The Electric Kingdom by David Arnold

message 419: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 102 comments I really like this twist with the colored skips and the overloads. I'll make a point of noting the color of the covers of all my books this month because I think it may make a difference on the mini comes into play. This looks like a lot of fun. But first to finish March!!

message 420: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 736 comments Jax,

I put you down for the Blue 7 (which is harder than a 6), Red 2 and a pink and black cover (either of the first two you list work for black but the third is too many colors).

message 421: by Ella (new)

Ella Wilson (readsbyella) | 49 comments Has anyone read Daisy Jones and the six before? If so, I was hoping to read it in April and I could do it for a reverse card. I could have done it for the Red 2 but unfortunately, Jax is already reading something for that particular card.

Black Mischief by Evelyn Waugh
3 stars
Dated satire on outrageously racist British and French diplomats in a small African country which undergoes a turbulent change of leadership. Some funny bits some a bit dull.

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments I put down April in Spain by John Banville for orange. Ella has added one as well so we've got that covered. Also added Prayer by Philip Kerr for white.

And I also added You Had It Coming by B.M. Carroll for Red Skip

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I put my Q book ahead of Beach Read and finished it this morning.
(also works for several card options).

It looks like my books Beach Read and Purrs & Peril could still be useful. (I see these cards open on the main tracking sheet: One (2 cards) and 3,5,9,0,6 all one card each).

But I might hold off in finishing them until the 31st just in case. Especially if they work for a color card. There's more unfinished books on the planning sheet than empty spots on the main sheet.

Mary and I have both read it and we needs lots of reverses so that works great.

Edited: What version of Daisy Jones & The Six are you reading? The version you have linked is a white cover and not red.

I found this version Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid or Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid or Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid . You have to shelf the version you are reading. I'd consider only the middle one red, which seems to be the French version.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I'm definitely going to hold off on finishing Beach Read until I know if it's needed in March or not. It works for a couple of the yellow cards. I'll save the last chapter for either Thursday or Friday.

The April hand looks like a good month for us to get more points.

I'm going to check out and start Five Little Pigs. If A Contradiction can't finish it, than I can and if they do than I'll finish it in April. Then it can be used for reverse or a green card.

Yellows are hard to cover so that would be good. I think a bit of the books on the planning sheet are moving to April. However, I know I have 2-3 more personally that I need to finish this month for other challenges or for the mini.

message 429: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Other team challenges and library holds are what keep throwing me off on what I initially put on the spreadsheets. That and the mini-challenges mid-month.

I very much relate. I really like the mini but I also find myself juggling due dates.

I can hold off on it. If the book you were going to read works for something else great, if not then just use it for the skip. I'm in no hurry with that one. I think yellow and greens are always the hard ones to find.

This book for some reason for me felt like it had a really slow start. The end was interesting and everything finally came together interestingly enough, but oof it was rough getting there.

I've also added 2 reverses--I've read Where the Crawdad's Sing --Ella added it for April orange but it could be a reverse instead because I have an orange as well, and am going to start Flaubert's Parrot soon. Shannon read that this month.

That is great, but you need to put the correct cover on the spreadsheet. So whichever version with the red cover you are reading, needs to be on the SS. Also, then we can use it for a Red 9 since it has a Nick character. (Same for the black cover, though less critical as we will likely use that as a reverse since I have read it and we need more reverses than black covers).

Okay, I have now done that. I'm happy for Darker Shade of Magic to be used for both the black coloured card and reverse and I'm also happy to use Daisy Jones for the Red 9 card as well as a reverse. I will update the SS with this information now!

Thank you!

Great, thank you for doing that. Darker Shade is only 25% black since the background is all grey but still works on a reverse. I'll run Daisy Jones by the captain’s group since I am really bad at pink v red.

Okay cool! Also, don't worry I added Eclipse which I can use for the black coloured card instead of A Darker Shade of Magic. I also hope that Daisy Jones can work as it looks like it is mostly red in colour.

I will replace Daisy Jones with another red cover book. I still believe that the cover is red so I am surprised that 3 people didn't think it was.
