Silas Marner by George Eliot 5 stars https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...

I loved this classic novel and have no idea why I haven't read it before. It's a perfectly crafted story about a poor, lonely, badly done by weaver, Silas Marner, who eventually finds love and acceptance. As does Jane Austen, Eliot has various perceptive insights into the ways people think and justify actions to themselves either individually or as a group, all of which are just as true today as in 1861 when it was published.

Mary, I'll move stuff around as need later. I am hoping some people who are already reading books find random W's. Thank you

I have no idea if this is an accurate memory, but I have one of listening to Silas Marner on tape cassette on a long family road trip and it never ending as a child. I have avoided the book since then.

Haha Quite a few of the reviews say much the same thing but hated it at school. As adults they enjoyed it. It's not something primary age kids would enjoy. I always liked those 19th
century writers and was one of the few in my class who loved Thomas Hardy.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments So there's a banquet hall right next to my office building and I can see what goes on over there from my desk. Right now there's cop cars, a town trash truck, a State Police, a big fire truck and one of the smaller EMT trucks there. It could be my true crime obsession but I think they may have found a body or something. Stuff like that doesn't happen here. I think the last murder we had here was in the early 90's. We're right next to Springfield MA and we have had a few victims of Springfield crime show up here in the CT river. We're on one side and Springfield is on the other. In the 80's it was one of the most violent cities in America for quite a while. It's been majorly cleaned up since then.

Dance of Thieves (Dance of Thieves, #1) by Mary E. Pearson
Book: Dance of Thieves
Author: Mary E. Pearson
Date Finished: March 17, 2022

Rating: 4/5 Stars

This is a re-read for me. When I first started reading this series I thought I wouldn't enjoy it as much and then got hooked by characters and the story. Definitely worth the read.

Lexi | 736 comments March Mini Update – though books can always move
What we need:
3 color covers
6 paintings
Classic paintings can include portriats, such as The Gilded Ones (The Gilded Ones, #1) by Namina Forna
3 countries (or more as 2 of them can move into paintings)
4 W’s or X’s – Not too worried on these as more likely to find in random books

The Chrysalids by John Wyndham John Wyndham

This is another of the old edition paperbacks which have been sitting on my shelves since the 1970's, unread. The pages are sepia now and fall out randomly as the glue gives way.

This is about a post nuclear war/disaster world and is set in a community full of religious zealots determined to follow God's will and eliminate any deviants. ie malformed people, animals and plants. In a world once bombarded with radiation of course mutant life forms abound but the cause of the problem is lost in the mists of time. A group of young people who communicate by telepathy endeavour to keep their 'deviance' secret but are eventually exposed. Wyndham is a very direct and efficient storyteller.

Jen (book_worm23) | 229 comments Vow of Thieves (Dance of Thieves, #2) by Mary E. Pearson
Book: Vow of Thieves
Author: Mary E. Pearson
Date finished: 18 March 2022
Rating: 4/5 stars

It is the sequel to Dance of Thieves and basically does a good job of finishing off the story in a satisfying way. But also leaves things open enough if the author wants to go back and add to the story.

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments This is where I'm confused again... With the Swap task doesn't the regular sheet listing for a 2 have to be a T or a 2nd in series etc? eg shouldn't The Chrysalids be a Title: T in the regular sheet rather than W for Wyndham as it is in the Mini?

It goes in both places, which is great. It means we can use Draw 2's to cover minis and main hands.

From FAQ:

With task 4. We have to read for the cards just the same, but the 2 we read ALSO needs to have a W aspect (in addition to the T)... yes? Or are we reading it INSTEAD of the T?
You are reading W instead of T

Jacob's Room by Virginia Woolf Virginia Woolf
This was her first published novel-- 1922. Jacob is portrayed through his actions and interactions with other characters rather than through his thoughts. The whole book is a series of beautifully expressive impressions and imagery of Jacob and the world he inhabits leading up to WW1. There's an overall sadness generated by the knowledge that the war annihilated almost that whole generation of young men.

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments This wouldn't qualify as either type of art cover would it?

The Hiding Place by Jenny Quintana
4 stars
A good read about a woman found in the foyer of a block of flats as a new born baby, who is trying to find her mother and father.

I listed this in the Mini sheet for the author Quintana but oddly enough it has another Q for a character whose name is Kenneth Quip. Also qualifies as black cover.

Missed this earlier, sorry. Yes, looks like a wood print. Works great for classical.

Jax (jaxn) | 102 comments Finished Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour for a green cover. And did the audio for The Quick Fix: Why Fad Psychology Can't Cure Our Social Ills for a book that starts with Q. (Highly recommend it as it has some interesting things to say in a very understandable about self help/pop psychology books).

(Also I fixed my shelves so all the books should be good to go now).

Nearly done with All the Light We Cannot See and it's very good. It's rare that I agree with books that get lots of hype but I can see why this one did.

I read it a bit ago, and I don't think any of it occurs in England but all in mainland Europe. Is that correct?

All the light has some radio broadcasts from England and some mentions of things that happen in England and the USA but so far none of the action takes place there. I assume you are looking at it as a travel souvenir? I can put it on the spreadsheet for now and hope it doesn't end with one of them migrating at the end of the novel. (So far it's all Germany and France for the action)

Crome Yellow (Modern Classics) by Aldous Huxley

3 stars
Alternately interesting and a bit dull. Written in 1921 about a group of people staying at a country house, Crome, all with different views of the world and society. Some comments are very perceptive and relevant today, others aren't. It's the type of English country house gathering that Agatha Christie has, but she'd bump someone off.

Any cards or mini-challenge items we have too much or too little of?

message 386: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 102 comments I may end up reading One Last Stop next month so I substituted in two other books for colored covers since combined they are both shorter. My version of The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau has the mostly black cover with the lighbulb that spells Ember in the filament. And The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin should also work (also works for W but looks like we are closing to being done with that).

message 387: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 736 comments Jax, both are over 50,000 words so that works great

We only need 1 W/X and 2 color covers (can't be one of the normal colors: red, blue, green, yellow) for the mini

Also, we need 2 Reverse books; as of right now, the ones others have read work for Color cards. (This can be the same as the color cover for the mini but not the W card).

Yes, if it on the SS than I assume it will be read. So by need, I mean the empty spaces.

The 6 month rule is only for rereads so you can read for a reverse the same day after someone if you want

I'm not sure about grey, but we can use it for The title or standalone if you would like to add it to the SS.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Does "The" count for spell outs? I thought it didn't. But I'll add it. Tin Eye says about 80% when you add all the grays together. It says the trees are gray not green. But it never says the colors I think a cover looks like.

I didn't even thing about stand alone. I'll add it. It was a wish list book that came up from the library and I was running out of time.

Also I've read The Wife Upstairs and noted the spreadsheet.
